Biotechnological conversion of biomass into fuels and chemicals requires hydrolysis of the polysaccharide fraction into monomeric sugars. The aim of this study is to optimize the hydrolysis of rice straw and investigate the effects of the H2SO4 concentration, reaction time and rice straw concentration on the production of reducing sugar. This study was determined based on the 23 factorial central composite design (CCD). Response surface methodology (RSM)
was adopted to optimize the hydrolysis conditions aiming to attain maximum reducing sugar production from rice straw. The obtained optimum conditions were as follow: H2SO4 concentration of 2% (w/w), reaction time of 120 min and rice straw concentration of 15% (w/w) with temperature of 120℃. The model predicted that maximum reducing sugar production which can be obtained using the above optimal conditions of variables was 20337 mg-reducing sugar/L.
Similarly, experimental result of reducing sugar production was obtained as 19628 mg-reducing sugar/L. This result was in close agreement with the model prediction.
