In this study, we examined the anti-diabetic activity using in vitro system the active compound isolated from Tetragonia tetragonioides. The α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of the MeOH extract exhibited weak activity (50% at 5.527 mg/ml) while the n-hexane fraction showed 50% inhibition at 0.723 mg/ml. In addition, the MeOH extract of Tetragonia tetragonioides and different fractions of this extract were studied for α -amylase inhibitory activity.
The n-hexane fraction showed α-amylase inhibitory activity of about 56% at a concentration of 10 mg/ml. The stearic acid isolated from the n-hexane fraction showed markedly high inhibitory activity against porcine pancreatic α-amylase.
Our study, for the first time, revealed the anti-diabetic potential of Tetragonia tetragonioides and this study coluld be helpful to develop medicinal preparations or nutraceutical and functionnal foods for diabetes and related symptoms.
