In mammals, melanin production is restricted to the melanocytes of the skin, hair follicles, and eye. Three melanocyte-specific enzymes, tyrosinase, tyrosinase-related protein-1 (TRP-1), and TRP-2 are involved in melanogenesis, in which tyrosine is converted into melanin pigments. The stimulation of melanogenesis resulted from an increase in the activity of tyrosinase, a key
enzyme in melanin synthesis. In particular, tyrosinase catalyzes two rate-limiting steps in melanin synthesis : the hydroxylation of tyrosine to 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA), and the oxidation of DOPA to dopaquinone.
Recently, the development of the whitening with natural products has been widely studied. This study aimed to screen effective samples among natural products by test of melanogenesis inhibition.
