Plant derived active ingredients for cosmetics are from intact plants or chemical synthesis; however, their productions by plants are restricted by cultivation regions or seasonal harvest. In contrast, plant cell cultures could be an alternative source to supply phytocompounds because of abilityto produce plant materials of high quality and with guaranteed standards.
Development of whole cells of in vitro plant cell cultures for cosmetic application without separation and purification of phytochemicals could be an innovativeway to prepare cosmetic ingredients containing active compounds.
We induced callus from Vitis vinifera, Papaver somniferum and Angelica gigas and applied them, with/without cosmetic bases industrially used, to human skin for sensibility tests. A. gigas cells, showing tyrosinase inhibitory effect, were applied to wash-off type cosmetics such as facial foam, mask pack and massage cream. There still remained some tasks to improve
concerning toxic compounds plant cells may produce or a solubility problem due to cell walls. Nevertheless, use of whole cells as active ingredients of cosmetics could be a novel application of plant cell cultures toward commercially valuable products.
