본고는 조선후기 우화소설 <두껍전>이 당대의 구비문학적 특징을 수용하였고, 이를 통해 조선후기 문화예술적 양상과 구술문화와 기술문화의 흐름이 반영되어 있음을 고찰하였다. 기존의 <두껍전> 연구들이 견지한 역사주의적 시각에서 벗어나 작품이 보여주는 장면에 주목하는 과정에서 <두껍전>의 형성과 향유에는 구비문학적인 흥미소들이 강하게 작용하고 있음을 발견하였다. 이에 <두껍전>이 지닌 구비문학적 특징들을 연행예술과 재담의 측면으로 나누어 살펴보았다.먼저 <두껍전>은 판소리의 단위사설인 노정기를 수용하여 장면을 확장하고 서사전개의 뼈대로 삼았다. 그리고 <두껍전> 전수록본에 수록된 다양한 연행예술을 통해 당대 구비문학의 넘나듦과 활발한 유흥문화를 살펴보고, 그 속에서 당대 전문적인 광대와 가객의 활동을 엿볼 수 있었다. 이로써 <두껍전>에 반영된 조선후기 문화예술의 한 양상을 확인했다.<두껍전>의 가장 중요한 흥미소가 되는 언변대결의 재담적 특징을 통해서 당대의 독자들이 느꼈을 재미를 생각해보았다. 여우와 두꺼비의 세상구경은 각종 전고를 수용하여, 다양한 이야기판의 형성을 통한 재담의 내용적 재미를 준다. 그리고 두꺼비의 지식자랑은 화제와 관련된 것들을 막힘없이 열거하고 주워섬기는 언어적 측면에서의 감탄과 재미를 주고 있다. 이러한 논의를 통해 <두껍전>에는 당대의 유흥문화와 이를 이끌었던 전문적인 광대․가객의 활동이 생생하게 담겨 있음을 알 수 있었다. 나아가 이들이 <두껍전>의 작가이거나, 작품의 형성에 결정적인 영향을 끼친 존재였을 가능성을 제기해 보았다. 이로써 기존 연구에서 말하는 조선후기의 역사․사회적 상황뿐만 아니라, 문화․예술적 양상이 <두껍전>에 반영되어 있음을 주장했다. 그리고 조선후기에 일어난 구술문화와 문자문화의 역동적인 흐름이 <두껍전>에 담겨 있음을 확인하여, 고전소설사에서 <두껍전>이 지니는 의미를 찾을 수 있었다.
