"Choecheok-jeon" was created by Cho Wi-han, reflects the author's experience and his literary imagination. This work describes the passionate love between Choe Cheok and Ok Yeong. It depicts the breakup of lovers and miraculous reunion of their family members. The story unfolded in Joseon, China, Manchuria, Japan and Vietnam during the disturbances of East Asian War from the later 16th century to the first half of the 17th century."Choecheok-jeon" developed from Jeongyu-jaeran(丁酉再亂) in 1597 to the Ming dynasty's subjugation of Liaodong in 1619. Cho Wi-han actually lived through the hardships of the war which was entirely reflected in his work. The process that Ok Yeong, the heroine, left Seoul and settled down in Namwon was described as if Cho Wi-han, the author, had sought refuge in Namwon. Especially, "Choecheok-jeon's" subject material and the author's brother, Cho Chan-han's love affair have something in common. Cho Chan-han had fallen in love with Goheung Yu at the town of refuge in 1593. However she was caught by Japanese soldier and died for her chastity. This story is similar to Choe Cheok and Ok Yeong's marriage at the town of refuge in 1593 and the tragic parting as a result of war.Choe Cheok in "Choecheok-jeon" went to China after the war, Jeongyu-jaeran. He followed Ming's soldier, Yuyouwen(余有文) and they crossed the Yalu River. Choe Cheok had resided in Yaoxing(姚興), Zhejiang(浙江). After Yuyouwen was dead, Choe left there and went on a tour. The writing material of Choe's tour in China was reflected the author's desire and his experience. When he was Saeunsa Seojanggwan(謝恩使 書狀官) in 1610, he made a trip around China. Pyohae-rok which described Choe Bu(崔溥)'s extraordinary journey, affected "Choecheok-jeon". Choe Bu drifted from Jeju to China through the Hwanghae(Yellow sea) and returned to Joseon through Jiangnan(江南), Beijing(北京) and Yaoyang(遼陽). Choecheok-jeon has a resemblance to Jowanbyeok-jeon as well. Ok Yeong had caught by Japanese soldier, Dunu(頓于), was pulled along to Japan, did business and met Choe Cheok in Vietnam. That story is similar to Jowanbyeok-jeon. In that story, the hero was captured by the enemy and came back to Joseon through Vietnam and China.

16세기 말 17세기 초 동아시아의 戰亂을 시간적 배경으로 하면서, 조선․중국․만주․일본․월남을 넘나드는 공간적 스케일 속에, 최척과 옥영의 간절한 사랑, 家族의 離散과 기적적인 再會를 그리고 있는 <최척전>은, 작가 조위한의 경험 위에 문학적 상상력이 투영되어 창조된 작품이다.<최척전>은 1597년 정유재란으로부터 1619년 明의 遼東 정벌을 그 시대적 배경으로 하여 전개된다. 조위한은 실제로 이 시대를 살면서 전란의 고통을 몸소 체험했고, 그것이 작품에 고스란히 반영되어 나타난다. 여주인공 옥영이 서울을 떠나 남원에 정착하는 과정은 작자 조위한이 피란을 떠나 남원에 온 것과 흡사하게 기술하고 있다. 특히 임진왜란 다음 해인 癸巳年에 피란지에서 결연하였으나 왜병에게 잡혀 殉節함으로써 비극으로 끝난 고흥 유씨와 동생 조찬한의 사적은, 계사년에 피란지에서 결혼한 최척과 옥영의 아름다운 사랑, 그리고 이어지는 전란에 의한 비극적 離散이라는 <최척전>의 소재와 상통한다. <최척전>에서 최척은 정유재란 후 명나라 군사 余有文을 따라 압록강을 건너 중국으로 간다. 처음 최척이 거주했던 곳은 浙江의 姚興이었는데, 여유문이 죽자 그는 이 곳을 떠나 周遊하게 된다. 최척의 중국 周遊의 소재는 조위한이 평소 꿈꾸었고, 1610년 謝恩使 書狀官으로서 실현했던 중국 주유의 체험을 반영해 주고 있다.제주도에서 중국까지 황해를 漂浪하고 중국 강남으로부터 北京, 만주의 遼陽을 거쳐 조선으로 돌아온 崔溥의 기이한 여정을 기록한 <漂海錄>은 <최척전>에 일정한 영향을 끼친 것으로 보인다. 한편 <최척전>에서 옥영이 왜병인 頓于에게 붙들려 일본으로 끌려가 배를 타고 장사를 다니다가 安南(越南)에서 최척과 만나고 중국에 들어가 사는 대목은, 임진왜란 때 포로로 잡혀 멀리 월남까지 갔다가 중국을 거쳐 귀국한 얘기를 담은 <조완벽전>과 유사하다.
