There are three kinds of old novels which are old-print novels, serial novels in newspapers or magazines and transcriptions from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. This thesis aims to research the commerciogenic character of old-print novels. Writers attempted to change the style of novels, but they did not perfectly deviate from the old style of novels. By the way, there were numberous stable readers preferring old-print novels. For this reason, old-print novels published tremendous from 1912 to 1927. They were generally published during the agricultural off-season. This was for commercial profits. There were many disputes of literary copyrights, but the jury did not authorize copyrights for old novels. So a old novel could be published different publishing companies. The commerciogenic character of old-print novels was formed by close inspection of Japanese imperialism and pursuit of commercial profits. It followed the appearance of ‘story-telling’ as a natural consequence because of being incompatible with the pursuit of commercial profits and the enlightening the public. It was the conspicuous transformation of writing at the the transition periods to the modern times.

19세기말～20세기초 고전소설은 크게 구활자본 고전소설, 신문 및 잡지에 연재된 고전소설, 그리고 필사본의 형태로 존재한다. 이 글은 그 중에서도 구활자본 고전소설의 글쓰기 방식, 그 중에서도 상업적인 면과 구활자본 고전소설이 어떻게 만나고 있는가에 주목하였다.신소설은 전대와 다른 전혀 새로운 글쓰기를 주창하고 나섰지만, 이미 체득된 전대의 글쓰기 방식에서 완전히 자유로울 수 없었다. 그렇지만 구활자본 고전소설을 안정적인 독자층을 확보하고 있기에 고전소설은 폭발적으로 출간된다. 구활자본 고전소설은 1912～1927년에 널리 향유되었다. 구활자본 고전소설은 농한기에 주로 출간되는데, 이는 출판사의 상업성과 관련된다. 이러한 상업성은 당시 저작권과 관련한 분쟁을 불러일으키기도 한다. 재판에서는 고전소설의 저작권을 인정하지 않는다. 어느 한 출판사의 책이 다른 출판사에서 그대로 출간될 수 있었던 배경도 여기에서 비롯한다. 출판사에서는 독자 및 세책업자를 상대로 광고를 한 것도 구활자본 고전소설이 지닌 상업성과 긴밀한 관련성을 보인다.
