Korea's statistics of the aged indicates that medicine and other welfare areas have entered the advanced stage, the birth rate has continued to drop, and aging of the population has reinforced every year. With the increasing importance of the silver class in society, more interest has been shown in their living environments. The elderly have increasingly wanted to be independent from their children and pursue a rich and happy life. In recent years, the number of facilities to satisfy those needs of theirs has multiplied, and one of the examples is a silver town. Silver towns have emerged as a new axis of the silver industry providing such services as medical facilities, entertainment and sports for the old. The silver class is in the period of physical aging and its symptoms, which means that a living environment claims huge significance in terms of physical and psychological needs. The spaces where they engage in independent activities should be organized more efficiently, and such environments as can bring a sense of happiness and stability to their life should be created in pursuit of mental stability and physical health. It's unfortunate that Korea's silver towns take no consideration of the elderly's visual elements merely emphasizing unity according to the building owners, interior elements, and companies. The previous studies on the topic focused on the perspective of way finding and interior elements. In this study, the investigator conducted experiments among the elderly aged 65 or older according to the UN criteria in four major silver towns adjacent to a city(Samsung Noble County, Blooming The Classic, Myongji Elfenheim, and High 1 The Village). I produced quantitative data through a survey on the visual differences of signs and the magnitude measurements and used the data to identify the problems with the existing signs and suggest new layouts. In short, the sign systems of a silver town used by the elderly should have greater chroma and luminosity differences than the existing signs, and the spaces between lines and letters should be larger by 20% than those for common people for faster reading. And the elderly preferred the headline gothic type in Korean and the modern sans serif type in English. Finally, the limitations of the study come from the fact that it didn't approach the sign field from sound and olfactory and auditory senses and that there were no English speakers in the subject group.

우리나라 고령자 통계를 살펴보면 의료분야와 기타 복지여건이 선진화로 접어들며 출산율은 감소하는 반면 인구의 고령화는 날로 증가하는 추세에 있다. 따라서 실버계층의 사회적 비중이 커짐에 따라 생활환경에 대한 관심이 증대되었다. 노인들은 자녀로부터 독립하여, 윤택하고 행복한 삶을 추구하고자 하는 욕구가 늘어남에 따라 그 욕구를 충족시켜주는 시설이 몇 년 사이 크게 증가하였다. 그 대표적인 사례가 실버타운이다. 고령자를 위주로 의료시설, 오락시설, 스포츠 등의 서비스를 제공하며 새로운 실버산업의 중심축으로 떠오르고 있다. 실버계층은 일반적으로 신체적 노화현상이 나타나는 시기에 있으므로 주거환경은 그들의 신체적, 심리적 측면 등에서 중요한 의미를 가진다. 실버계층이 자립적으로 활동하는 공간은 보다 효율적으로 구성되어져야 하며 정신적 안정, 신체적 건강을 추구하여 생활에 행복감과 안정감을 줄 수 있는 환경이 조성되어야 한다. 하지만 우리나라 실버타운들은 주로 건물주와 인테리어의 요소, 회사에 따라서 단지 통일성만 강조했을 뿐 고령자의 시각적인 요소를 전혀 고려하지 않았다. 그 동안의 연구들은 길찾기(Wayfinding)의 관점이나, 인테리어 요소로서 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 국내 대표적 도시근접형 실버타운 4군데(삼성 노블카운티, 블루밍 더 클래식, 명지 엘펜하임. 하이원 더 빌리지)를 선정하여 UN이 정한 65세 이상 고령자들을 대상으로 실험을 진행하였다. 사인에 대한 시각적 차이점을 설문과 매그니튜드 측정법을 통해 정량적 데이터를 산출하였고 그 데이터를 근거로 기존의 사인시스템의 문제점과 새로운 레이아웃을 제안하였다. 결과적으로 고령자가 이용하는 실버타운의 사인시스템은 기존의 사인보다 색채의 채도와 명도 차이가 높아야하고, 문자의 행간과 자간의 차이는 일반인에 비하여 20% 정도 높아야 가독성이 빠른 것으로 조사되었다. 또한 한글 서체는 견출고딕체를 영문은 현대적 산세리프체를 선호하는 것으로 조사되었다. 마지막으로 소리, 후각, 청각 등에 의한 사인 영역에 대한 접근을 못한 점과 영어사용자를 피험자로 진행하지 못한 점은 아쉬움으로 남는다.
