Regardless of the denomination, the trend of renewing the modern worship service is to actively make good use of the various heritages of the worship services of the early churches and many churches in the world. In this respect, studying the root and process of forming the early worship service of the Korean Methodist Church helps to understand and renew its today’s worship service. The reason why the author considers that the study of Sunday worship service of the early Methodist Church is needed is that the problem of today’s worship service is that of Sunday worship service. What is needed for studying Sunday worship service is Book of Worship and Rite which the Methodist Church authorizes. The purpose of this paper is to study Sunday worship service of the early Korean Methodist Church presented in Book of Worship and Rite. For this purpose, the author found out and analyzed the hidden early documents, examining the process of forming Sunday worship service. First of all, the author inquired the worship service of John Wesley and the American Methodist Church, which are the roots of Sunday worship service of the Korean Methodist Church. Then, after examining the process of forming Sunday worship service of the early Korean Methodist church, the author suggests the new task in concluding. The era range is from 1885 when Appenzeller started his mission in Korea to 1931, the next year when the Korean Methodist Church launched.

현대 예배갱신 흐름은 교단을 초월하여 초대교회 예배전통과 세계교회의 다양한 예배유산을 적극 활용하는 형태를 취하고 있다. 이런 측면에서 한국감리교회 초기예배의 뿌리와 형성과정을 고찰함은 오늘의 한국감리교회 예배이해와 갱신에 큰 도움을 줄 것이다. 논자가 초기한국감리교회 예배 중에 주일예배 연구가 필요하다고 보는 것은 오늘의 예배문제는 곧 주일예배의 문제라고 인식하기 때문이다. 주일예배를 연구하는데 필요한 도구는 교단의 공인된 예배예식서이다. 이를 위해 그동안 발굴되지 못한 초기문헌들을 발굴하여 분석하기도 하였고, 주일예배의 형성과정을 살펴보았다. 먼저, 한국감리교회 주일예배의 뿌리라 할 수 있는 존 웨슬리 예배와 미국감리교회 예배를 고찰하였다. 그 후 초기한국감리교회 주일예배의 형성과정을 살펴보았으며, 결론에서는 새로운 과제도 제안하였다. 초기한국감리교회의 시대적 범위는 Appenzeller가 내한하여 선교를 시작한 1885년부터 기독교조선감리회가 태동한 이듬해인 1931년까지 두었다.
