21st century could be expressed in a word, ‘change’. In this circumstances, churches try to do their best to achieve their missions in the midst of social changes. In order to do this, ministers of the churches should understand both their churches and this world thoroughly. It, therefore, is useful for Korea pastoral leaders to study Peter Drucker who is an expert on organizations and leadership in the time of change. Drucker’s insights are well presented on his understanding of organizations. Drucker insists that people should understand the organization organically in relation with other organizations. With considering of the instability and changeability of the organizations, organization leaders need to take care of their organization preventively with change-sensitive attitudes. In the area of leadership, Drucker suggests the leader’s self-development. This leader’s self-development includes time management, focusing on results, developing strength, making priority, decision making process. A leader needs to develop his/her followers. A leader needs to select followers, to find out their abilities, to position them properly, to provide them the necessary information for work, and to motivate them to work hard. In order to do those, it is necessary for a leader to develop communication ability. Implicating Drucker’s insights on organizations and leadership is as follows. Because the church as an organization is inner-goal oriented organization, pastoral leaders need to focus on evangelism with their members’spiritual growth which are the basic goal for the church. With the understanding of a church as an organic organization in relation with other organizations in this world, pastoral ministers also need to check inappropriate programs and remove them regularly. In terms of the implication of leadership insights, pastoral leader’s self-development should be the first thing to do. Based upon their accurate self-understanding, pastoral leaders develop the ability to achieve short-term goals, have the open-minded communication attitudes, and could observe their churches from outsiders’viewpoint like lay persons and non-Christians. They are sensitive to the changes of circumstances around their churches for the early diagnosis in the times of change. Furthermore, they need to analyze the causes of the unexpected failure and success. In order to respond to the changes in the postmodern era, finally, pastoral ministers should keep their eyes on both the core values and goals of the church.

21세기는 변화의 시기이다. 이러한 변화의 시기에 교회 역시 세상의 변화 가운데서 자신의 사명을 가장 효율적으로 달성하기 위해 노력해야 한다. 이를 위해 목회지도자는 조직의 일종인 자신의 교회를 잘 이해해야 하며 나아가서 그 교회가 속한 사회 역시 깊이 이해할 수 있어야 한다. 이러한 이해를 바탕으로 목회자는 교회에서 상황과 변화에 알맞은 리더십을 발휘 할 수 있다. 이러한 시기에 변화 시기의 조직과 리더십 영역의 대표적 학자인 피터 Drucker의 조직과 리더십에 관한 통찰들을 살펴보는 일은 목회지도자들에게 매우 유익하다. 이러한 Drucker의 통찰들은 그의 조직이해에 잘 나타나 있다. 그는 조직을 다른 사회 조직들과의 유기적인 관계 속에서 이해하여야 한다고 주장하고 있다. 또한 조직을 관리하는 사람은 현대 조직의 특징인 조직의 불안정성과 변화를 고려하여 변화에 민감한 예방적 조직경영을 할 필요가 있다고 제안한다. 리더십에 관한 통찰에서 리더는 우선적으로 자기개발을 할 것을 제안하고 있다. 이러한 자기개발은 주로 시간관리, 결과에 집중하기, 장점의 개발, 우선순위의 확립, 그리고 의사결정의 영역에서 필요하다. 리더는 또한 자신의 조직의 구성원을 개발하는 일에 노력해야 한다. 조직원을 선정하고, 그들의 자질을 파악하고 적절한 자리에 배치하여야 하며, 조직원들이 주어진 일을 하는데 필요한 정보를 제공하며 동기를 유발하는 일을 할 수 있어야 한다. 이러한 일들을 하기 위해 리더는 의사소통능력을 잘 개발하여야 한다. 이러한 Drucker의 통찰들을 조직과 리더십의 영역에서 교회에 적용해보면 다음과 같다. 조직으로서의 교회는 내적 목표 지향적이기 때문에 목회지도자는 성경에서 제시하고 있는 교회 본연의 목표인 성도의 성장과 이를 통한 복음전도에 초점을 맞추어야 한다. 또한 사회와의 유기적 관계를 지닌 조직으로서 교회는 고립적이고 자기충족적인 자세에서 벗어나 세상의 변화와 필요에 부응하여 교회의 부적합한 정책들을 주기적으로 점검하여 제거할 수 있어야 한다. 리더십의 적용에서, 먼저 목회지도자들은 자기개발에 힘써야 한다. 특히 목회자들은 정확한 자기 이해를 바탕으로 단기목회 목표달성의 능력을 배양하여야 하며 이를 위해 열린 대화 자세를 지녀야하며 평신도와 비기독교인의 입장에서 자신이 목회하는 교회를 볼 수 있어야 한다. 목회지도자는 변화 시대 목회에서의 조기진단을 위해 교회를 둘러싼 환경의 변화에 관심을 지녀야 한다. 그리고 예상치 못한 성공이나 실패에 대해 분석하여 그 원인을 파악하는 일이 필요하다. 끝으로 포스트모던 시대의 변화에 대응하는 목회자의 자세는 교회의 핵심가치와 목표에 초점을 맞추어 변화와 변동에 잘 대처하는 일이다.
