In modern days, our country and the world are faced with many problems that appear insurmountable. In such a context, Christian leadership is an appropriate response because it enables one to relate to others, not as an expert who knows the way from experience, but as a partner who can help discover the way. Discovering the way is vital for today’s church and leaders. This paper aims at equipping pastors to play a leading role for the right directions in the lives of church members and fellow leaders through the study of the 21st century leadership model. The first part of this paper examines Korean church contexts in relation to Korean society (outside of the church) and the church itself (inside of the church) for causing problems and crisis of leadership. The latter part of this paper presents the definitions of spiritual leadership, the preferable pastorship in the Biblical viewpoint, and some kinds of spiritual leadership in practical perspective for the Korean Protestant pastors in the 21st century. Today’s church stands in want of some of transformational leadership, servant leadership, and mentoring leadership for the 21st century.

21세의 현대사회는 급속도로 빠르게 변화해가는 사회이다. 이 가운데서 정치적으로, 경제적으로, 사회적으로, 그리고 종교적으로 많은 문제점들이 야기되어 왔다. 그래서 사람들은, 그리고 교회내에서 성도들은 이 암담한 상황 속에서도 사람들에게 희망을 주고 비전을 제시하며 자신을 희생하며 국민들을 섬기는 진정한 지도자들이 세워지기를 간절히 기다리고 있다. 선교초기부터 목회자들이 나라와 민족 앞에 영적, 사회적 지도력을 발휘해왔던 것처럼 21세기 한국교회 영적 지도자인 목회자들도 우리 동시대의 아픔을 함께 아파하고 나눔을 실천하는 섬김의 지도력을 실천하는 일에 우선 해야할 것이다. 목회자가 자신의 영역을 지킬 수 있는 유일한 길은 세상의 구원을 위해서 싸우는 데 있음에도 불구하고, 자신만을 위해 신의 권위를 빙자한 세속적 권력만을 취하고자 한다면 하나님과 예수 그리스도의 자녀와 제자이기를 포기하는 것이다. 지금까지 목회자의 영적 지도력에 관해서는 신학자와 목회자들 사이에서 나름대로 많은 주장들이 제시되어 왔다. 그러나 새롭게 펼쳐지는 21세기에 요구되어지는 창조적이며 효과적인 목회자의 영적 지도력이 요구되는 상황 속에서 21세기 한국교회의 목회자가 목회자의 본질을 도외시 하지 않고, 영적 지도자로서의 역할을 다하기 위해 본 논문은 교회 내외적인 문제들로 인한 21세기 한국교회의 목회적 상황과 그동안의 목회 지도력의 문제점을 파악해 보고, 바람직한 목회자상으로서 성서에 나타난 목회자상들을 살펴봄으로써 21세기 한국교회 목회자가 갖추어야할 영적 지도력으로써 변혁적 지도력, 종의 지도력, 멘토링의 지도력 등을 제시했다.
