The purpose of this study was to address the cause of escape accidents with officers who have gone through them and generate a substantial theory defining and explaining their psychological changes and the process to adapt themselves to the situations in the workplace. This study has been written primarily for explaining what the causes of accidents are and how officers have gone through the shock from the horrible accidents. This study has been executed by applying the grounded theory based on Strauss and Corbin(1998).
7 correctional officers who finished the entire process of investigation were interviewed. They were in the range about 3 years when they experienced correctional accidents.
The result of this research revealed 103 concepts, 44 subcategories and 15 categories.
The process going through the suffering caused by the accidents was revealed as "the stage of experiencing correctional accidents", "the stage of adjusting the shock from the accidents", "the stage of seeking changes and adjustments" and "the stage of development and admittance".
The core category in selective coding was "rebuilding one's life and overcoming the suffering from the accidents". The analysis of the consistently present relationships between categories centered on the core category revealed "overcoming and growing" and "being in the ongoing pain".
This study makes three major suggestions. The first, the systematic and overall checkup for the organization is required. The second, the further consideration for staffs who experienced the accidents, such as the introduction of counseling programs / treatment in the early stage of the accidents and the effort to make the investigation process more transparent and rational, is strictly needed. And the third is that program developments for inmates and the systematic classification system are needed.

본 연구는 교정사고를 경험한 교도관을 통해 사고의 원인을 살펴보고, 사고 경험과정에서의 심리변화와 적응과정을 규명하고 설명하는 실체이론을 개발하고자 실시되었다. 연구문제는 ‘교정사고의 원인은 무엇이며 이를 겪은 교도관이 그 충격으로부터 벗어나는 과정은 어떠한가?’로 근거이론(Strauss & Cobin, 1998)방법을 적용하여 수행되었다.
본 연구는 도주사고를 경험한지 약 3년이 경과하여 행정 및 사법적인 모든 사고 처리 과정이 종료된 교도관 7명을 대상으로 심층면접을 통해 실행되었다.
자료수집은 2007년 9월부터 2008년 3월까지 심층면담과 설문지 조사를 통해 이루어졌으며, 면담전에 참여자로부터 참여동의서를 받았고, 면담내용은 녹음한 뒤 그 내용을 녹취하였다.
연구결과 개방코딩에서는 103개의 개념, 44개의 하위범주, 15개의 범주가 도출되었다.
사고경험의 고통으로부터 벗어나는 과정은 ‘교정사고의 경험단계’, ‘사고충격의 조정단계’, ‘변화․적응의 모색단계’, ‘발견과 수용단계’ 등 4가지로 분석되었다.
선택코딩에서 핵심범주는 ‘사고의 고통을 이겨내고 삶의 터전 다시 일으켜 세우기’로 나타났으며, 핵심범주를 중심으로 지속적으로 나타나는 범주들간의 관련성을 확인한 결과, 유형은 ‘극복성장형’, ‘체념수용형’, ‘상처진행형’, ‘고립무원형’이 포함된 4가지로 분석되었다.
결론에서는 세 가지 큰 맥락, 즉 조직관리측면에서 시설․환경․제도․인력 등 조직전반에 걸친 과학적이고 체계적인 정기조직진단의 필요성을, 조직원 관리측면에서 조기상담/치료제도의 도입, 조사 및 책임묻기 과정에서의 투명성 및 합리성 제고 등 교정사고를 경험한 교도관에 대한 보다 세심한 배려의 필요성을, 수용자 측면에서 과학적인 분류체계 및 수용자 심성순화를 위한 다양한 프로그램 개발의 필요성에 대한 실천적 제언을 제시하였다.
