In this article, I attempted to understand the correctional ethics in the America summarizing the variable arguments of the perception and attitude of the correctional staffs through the ethical instruments, which was devised and studied by Professor Mary Stohr and others. The first chapter reads the academic backgrounds and meaning of the correctional ethics as well as its significance in Korea. The second chapter shows the codes of correctional ethics in the well known institutes like the American Correctional Association and th American Jail Association. In the third chapter, I summarized and analyzed the making process of the ethical instruments for the correctional ethics. Finally, I presented the need to study the correctional ethics in Korea.
Mostly I tried to argue the studies and cases of the America, but if necessary, I compared the studies with Korean conditions of correctional institutes of prisons and jails, and also emphasized the importance of the appropriate devising of the ethical instruments. Like other applied ethics, the correctional ethics should be developed with the process of the well-organized and scientific methods which also has to reflect the Korean conditions of the correctional system. Such studies leads to a newly meaningful change of the correctional administration and helps the inmates to prevent their recidivism as well.

이 논문은 미국에서의 교정윤리의 연구 중 윤리도구를 통한 교도관의 의식조사에 관련된 논의들을 정리하고 평가한 것이다. 1장에서는 교정윤리의 배경과 의미가 무엇인지를 살펴보면서 한국에서 교정윤리의 필요성을 강조하였고, 2장에서는 현재 미국의 대표적인 교정 기관들이 교정윤리 규정을 어떻게 정하고 있는지를 살펴보았고, 3장에서는 교정윤리를 만들기 위한 기초적인 작업으로 윤리도구의 제작과 절차 과정에 대한 스토어 교수 연구진의 2회에 걸친 연구 성과를 정리한 것이다. 마지막으로 국내에서의 교정윤리 연구의 필요성을 제시하였다.
많은 부분 미국의 연구와 사례를 중심으로 논의를 전개하였지만 필요할 때마다 국내의 교정윤리와의 관련성을 짚어보았으며, 우리나라의 교정 조건에 맞는 윤리도구의 개발의 필요성을 강조하고자 하였다. 다른 응용윤리가 모두 그러하듯이 교정윤리도 현실에 맞으면서도 체계적이고 과학적인 조사방법을 통해 만들어져야 한다. 그리하여 교도 행정의 변화는 물론이고 수용자의 재사회화에도 기여를 할 수 있어야 한다.
