One of the major problems that most of the modern aging societies should deal with is elder abuse. The purpose of this study is to introduce the prevalence, definition, and types of the
elder abuse, consequences that victims of the elder abuse experience, elder abuse occurring in institutional settings, and the characteristics of perpetrators and victims of the elder abuse. A
variety of intervention and preventive strategies for the elder abuse were also described. Great emphasis on educational approaches and financial support for the approaches was placed in oder to dispel age discrimination.

고령화사회로 변모하면서 발생하는 특성 중의 하나는 신체적으로나 정신적으로 가족을 비롯한 타인에게 의존하는 노인인구의 증가다. 이에 본고는 고령화사회에서 부각되고 있는 노인학대의 현상을 노인학대 발생빈도의 문제점, 노인학대의 정의와 범주, 노인학대가 노인에게 미치는 영향, 시설기관에서의 노인학대, 노인학대 가해자와 피해자의 특성 등을 살펴보면서 그 해결방안 및 예방책 등을 정리했다. 노인의 기능적 수준과 학대유형에 따라서 노인학대 해결방안이 다르지만, 노인학대가 발생하는 차별적인 환경개선을 위해서 노인을 위한 교육이나 노화과정에 관한 교육의 필요성, 재정적 지원 등을 강조했다.
