Older adults show poorer performance than younger adults on explicit memory tasks such as recall and recognition. However, there is conflicting evidence as to whether implicit memory is
impaired by aging. Moreover, it appears that older adults perform normally on some implicit memory tasks, but show somewhat reduced performance in some other implicit memory tasks. The purpose of this article is to provide a review of the performance of elderly people on implicit memory tasks. First, current findings using various implicit memory tasks are reviewed. Second, we introduce a number of theoretical accounts to explain the age difference between explicit and implicit memory. Finally, practical implications of implicit memory aging are also discussed.

노인들은 대체로 회상(recall) 및 재인(recognition)과 같은 외현기억(explicit memory) 과제 상에서 청년들보다 빈약한 수행을 보인다. 그러나, 노화가 진행되면서 암묵기억(implicit memory)도 이와 비슷하게 기억과제 수행의 감소가 나타나는지에 대해서는 상충되는 증거들이 있다. 또한, 이 연령차뿐만이 아니라 노인들은 일부 암묵기억 과제들의 수행은 정상적이지만, 다른 암묵기억 과제들에 있어서는 수행의 감소를 보인다. 본 논문의 목적은 노년기의 기억현상들 중 특히 암묵기억 과제 수행에서 나타난 연령차 연구의 결과들에 대한 개관을 제공하는 것이다. 첫째, 여러 가지 암묵기억 과제들을 사용해서 이루어진 현재까지의 연구결과들의 특징을 고찰하였다. 둘째, 외현기억과 암묵기억간의 연령차가 나타나는 이유를 설명하기 위한 이론적 제안들을 소개하였다. 마지막으로, 실생활과 관련된 암묵기억의 노화 연구의 함의를 기술하였다.
