This article was to review the marital conflict of the elderly couples from the viewpoints of conflict theory. At the same time, types of the marital conflict, coping behaviors, and related
variables were reviewed. The variables sex, age, education, health, income, attitudes toward sex role, self-esteem, differentiation of the self, division of labor, power relations between couples, communication style, the joint leisure pattern, relationships between elderly parents and their siblings were revealed as significant variables explaining the levels, types, or coping strategies of the marital conflict of the elderly couples.

노년기는 건강수준의 저하, 가족관계의 변화, 은퇴로 인한 수입 감소, 역할상실 등으로 인해 전반적인 생활의 재조정이 필요한 시기인데, 노년기 부부들의 관계도 재검토되어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 노년기 부부의 자원 분배나 권력의 역동적 관계를 파악하기 위해 노년기 부부의 갈등에 대한 선행연구들을 갈등이론의 관점에서 고찰하였다. 또 노년기 부부의 갈등양상에 영향을 미치는 성별, 연령, 교육수준, 건강, 소득, 성 역할 태도, 자아존중감, 자아분화수준, 가사노동분담, 권력, 의사소통, 여가공유, 자녀와의 관계 등 다양한 변인들의 효과를 개괄하였다. 마지막으로 노년기 부부의 갈등에 관한 연구들의 문제점을 지적하였다.
