While Korea has just begun to become the aging society in 2000, the Chonnam Province is going to be the aged society soon. That is to say, the ratio of the elderly population in the Province has been much higher than other areas in Korea. At the same time, the Province shows the predominance of female over male in the elderly population. It means that most of the problems related to aging might be the problem of the elderly women. Thus, it was argued that policy-makers should have more attention to the elderly women rather than just elderly population.

우리 나라 노인인구의 비율은 2000년 현재 7.0%를 넘어섰지만, 전라남도 지역의 노인인구는 이미 11.0%를 넘었으며 그리고 대부분의 농촌지역은 노인인구의 비중이 12.0%에서 15.0%에 이르고 있다. 또한 노인들의 인구 중에서도 여성들이 차지하는 비중이 절대적으로 높은 탓에 노인보건의료복지사업을 여성발전종합계획 사업의 한 부문으로 이해해야 할 정도가 되고 있다. 이에 본고는 전라남도 여성노인을 중심으로 노인정책의 발전방향을 제시해주기 위하여 그들의 건강 및 생활상을 파악하는 것이다. 전반적으로 전남지역 여성노인들은 남성들에 비하여 교육수준이 낮고, 혼자 사는 비율이 높으며, 건강관리비율도 낮으며, 또 각종 질환 및 치매의 유병율이 높은 편이었다.
