Situation of Research on Buddhism in Vietnam : Achievements and Issues
초록
영어
Briefly, in Vietnam Buddhism has been in relationship with other traditional religions and thoughts (Confucianism‐Buddhism‐Taosim), and the research of Buddhism should be devided into periods as: 1) Under Sino‐domination; 2) Independence of Dai Viet; 3) Under French colonialist domination (end of the 19th beginning of the 20th centuries); 4) Independence of the Democratic
Republic of Vietnam (1945~1954); 5) The country devided into two parts (1954~1975); 6) Vietnam reunited (1975) upto now.
Firstly, research of Buddhism started by foreign Buddhist missionaries both from India and China, but Mahayana from China prevailed over. Mau Tu’s Li Hou Lun was the first work of Buddhist study in Vietnam from Confucian approach, and still extant. Buddhism was accepted gradually, and under Ly‐Tran dynasties it was treated as the national religion. Buddhist studies were done both by Confucian researchers and mandarin and even by some Buddhist kings,
specially on issues of ontology, epitemology and humanity for the need of the country’s spiritual development. In Vietnam, Buddhist studies were strongly influenced by Chinese Zen Buddhism, however it was interrupted by many wars and invassions. Buddhism was researched as a complex subject of history, philosophy, literature and religion… and it has been utilized as spritual weapon for the resistance against foreign invaders in war time, as healing medicine for
wounded country after wars, and as a humane philosophy in peace time.
Modern issues of the Buddhist study in Vietnam are: 1) Buddhist role in resolving conflict and preventing danger of war; 2) Buddhist function in social justice; 3) Secular Buddhism and development of the country; 4) Buddhist activities in facing the danger of environment; 5) Buddhist solution for family’s problems; 6) Buddhist education: inheritance and development; 7) Buddhism in the age of digital technique.
