This thesis takes a view of EuiJae SungGooYong’s life and idea. EuiJae SungGooYong was born in Jan. 15, 1905 and died in Feb. 16, 1976. He was living in horrible period of Korean history experiencing the occupation by Japan and Korean War. This period was very disarranged because of antagonism and disorder. The extreme antagonism of the West vs. the East of the world, civilization vs. tradition, imperialism vs. nationalism, and communism vs. democracy caused disturbance on every aspect of politics, economy, society, and culture. Although this atmosphere of the society made people become like an animal that cannot be ethical or moral, EuiJae practicedthe teaching of the sages against the adversity. EuiJae SungGooYong’s learning inherited from DeokChon’s learning, who is his master. However, It would be true that EuiJae
SungGooYong’s learning actually based on GanJae’s studies because GanJae was the master of DeokChon, and EuiJae SungGooYong strictly followed and practiced GanJae’s learning. He inherited from his master’s philosophicalidea thoroughly and dug into it deeply. He also practiced it in his life. He was a real practical philosopher who was emphasis on control of mind for practicing.

본 논문은 한말의 도학자(道學者)인 의재 성구용의 생애와 사상을 조명한 글이다. 의재 성구용은 1905년 1월 5일에 昌寧成氏의 본고장인 燕岐郡 錦南面 達田里에서 출생하여 1976년 2월 16일에 세상을 마감하였다. 이 때는 일제 강점기와 한국전쟁 등 우리나라가 처한 역사적 최악의 시기다. 서양과 동양, 개화와 전통, 제국주의와 민족주의, 공산주의와 민주주의의 치열한 대립과 갈등에서 빚어진 정치ㆍ경제ㆍ사회ㆍ문화 등 모든 방면에서 방향을 잡지 못하고 우왕좌왕 반목과 무질서가 만연한 어수선한 시기였다. 선생은 이러한 수난기에 태어나 평생 동안 윤리강상이 소멸되어 어리석은 사람들이 모두 금수가 되어가
는 것을 바라보면서 온갖 역경 속에서도 성현들의 법도를 몸소 실천하였다.
선생의 학문은 스승인 덕천의 학문을 철저하게 계승하고 본받았다고 할 수 있다. 덕천도 스승 간재의 性師心弟說ㆍ性尊心卑說로 알려져 있는, 心이 性을 근본으로 한다는 心本性說을 계승하고 실천하는 데 철저했으므로 실제 선생의 학문은 간재선생의 학문을 추존하여 사유되었다고 말할 수 있다. 선생은 먼저 性은 理이고 心은 氣이며, 性은 無爲하고 心은 有爲하다는 견해를 분명히 하면서 有爲인 心은 無爲하나 모범이 되는 性本然을 위배하지 않고 본받아 善을 발휘해야 한다는 사상을 고수하고 있다.
선생은 스승의 철학사상을 철저하게 이어받아 천착함과 동시에 그것을 실천으로 연결시킨 실천철학자 즉 도학자로, 무엇보다도 실천을 위한 치심(治心)을 강조하였다.
