Horse riding is known to be beneficial for health. It is mentally and physically helpful to the people with cerebral palsy or other disabilities. As a result, a lot of research on the promotion of health through horse riding, safety of horse riding, and the prevention of injuries has been carried out in developed countries and in the countries where horse riding is popular. But, in Korea, research on horse riding is still at its infant stage. This study examines the injured body parts, injury types, the places and times of injury targeting people working with race hoses at race tracks in Korea. For this study, data on the injuries occurred at Seoul Horse Racing Park between 2000 and 2006 compiled by Korea Racing Authority were analyzed. In addition, this study presents the data and direction for safe management including the mechanism of injuries and provides reference data for safe horse riding for the horse riders. Injuries occurred most frequently at the race track(41.5%), stable(26.9%), horse riding arena(12.1%), horse pass(Other)(9.8%), and starting gate(9.7%). Most of the injuries occurred at the race track and stable. The body part most frequently injured was in the order of vertebrae lumbar(16.4%), cervical vertebrae(11.2%), head(9.0%), face(7.5%), and knee joint(7.1%). The most frequently occurred injury type was in the order of sprain(35.0%), contusion(27.8%), fracture(17.6%), and laceration(10.5%). The season in which injuries occurred most frequently was in the order of fall(279 cases), summer(276 cases), spring(267 cases), and winter(215 cases). Injuries occurred most frequently at the race track and stable regardless of season. Especially, injuries occurred frequently at the race track and horse pass(Other) in fall and at the stable, starting gate, and horse riding arena in summer. The most frequently injured body part according to season was in the order of vertebrae lumbar, cervical vertebrae, face, knee joint, chest, and head in spring; head, vertebrae lumbar, cervical vertebrae, chest, face, and knee joint in summer; vertebrae lumbar, cervical vertebrae, head, face, chest, and knee joint in fall; and vertebrae lumbar, cervical vertebrae, head, shoulder joint, and knee joint in winter.
