This paper is a study on mentoring as a way of mission for life for emerging leaders. The reason for looking at mentoring is that this method can be a good channel for today� young adults. Today� atmosphere can be described as postmodern. This postmodern ethos influences young adults in negative ways as far as their spiritual life is concerned. As a result, they are becoming more insecure, fragmented, lost and irresponsible to God� call. God calls them to be holy and responsible beings. It is therefore urgent to train these emerging leaders and lead them to the right direction, for our future will be in their hands whether they are ready or not. In order to assist them to become more confident, competent and accountable human beings in general and disciples of Christ in particular, mentoring is the key to enhance wholeness and growth in their spiritual walk. This paper proposes a wholistic mentoring system that will make a difference in the lives of emerging leaders. There have been mentoring programs called College and Seminary Life here at Presbyterian College and Theological Seminary (PCTS). However these courses do not seem to function effectively as they were intended, due to the lack of some theoretical and practical components. Therefore this paper suggests core components of mentoring theories by looking at three literatures. It also suggests applicable steps on how the mentoring should be carried out. A suggested mentoring model seeks to be wholistic to accommodate the physical, mental, intellectual, emotional, relational, socio-cultural, and spiritual needs of students. It will touch the lives of young adults at PCTS and transforms their lifestyle as disciples of Christ.

본 논문은 차세대 리더를 양육하기 위한 한 방법인 멘토링에 관한 것이다. 멘토링은 하나님이 인정하시는 리더로서 자신을 준비하고 있는 청년들을 위한 중요한 양육 수단이다. 그러나 소위 포스트모던 시대로 불리는 이 시대는 기독 청년들을 전방위적으로 압박하고 있다. 이 포스트모던 시대의 분위기는 그들을 영적인 존재로 살아갈 수 없도록 부정적인 영향을 미치고 있다. 결과적으로 그들은 자신들도 눈치채지 못하는 가운데 점점 더 파편화되어 가고 있으며, 마음의 고향을 잃어버린 채로 불안정적이고 무책임한 존재로 전락되어 가고 있다고 본다. 이러한 모습은 하나님이 본래 그들을 부르신 위대한 소명, 즉 책임적이고 거룩한 존재로서 이 세상에서 부르심에 합당한 삶을 살며 많은 이들을 옳은 길로 인도하는 삶과는 거리가 먼 것이다. 그러므로 이 논문은 다가오는 세대를 짊어지고 나갈 젊은이들이 리더로서 바로 서게 도와 줄 수 있는 길을 모색한 생명 선교의 한 방법을 기독교교육적 시각에서 모색하였다. 차세대 리더를 바로 양육하는 것은 우리에게 주어진 선택 사항이 아니라 필수 사항이다. 그들을 올바른 방향으로 인도하여 한편으로는 책임적이고 능력 있으며 믿을 만한 존재로, 또 다른 한편으로는 예수 그리스도의 복음 전파를 위하여 일하는 그리스도의 제자로 양육할 수 있는 멘토링은 생명을 살리고 양육하는 중요한 수단이다. 멘토링은 한 인간을 영적으로 살게 하는 효과적인 수단이며, 그의 영적 여정에서 성장과 성숙을 도모할 수 있게 하는 통전적인 양육 수단이라는 것을 본 논문이 주요 문헌으로 채택한 다음의 책에서 확인하였다. 앤더슨과 리스의 『영적 멘토링』(Spiritual Mentoring), 스탠리와 클린턴의 『연결』(Connecting), 푸의『리더 멘토링』(Mentoring Leaders)은 멘토링의 기독교교육 신학적 이론의 틀을 제공해 주었다. 통전적인 멘토링 시스템에 대한 바람은 현재 장로회신학대학교에서 시행하고 있는 대학 생활과 신학 생활이라는 두 과목에 대한 조명에서부터 시작되었다. 대학교와 신학대학원에 처음 입학한 신입생들의 학교 생활 적응을 돕는 취지에서 시작된 두 과목은 현재도 나름대로의 기능을 하고 있다. 그러나 이 두 과목이 멘토링으로서 균형 있게 발전될 수 있다면 차세대 리더를 양육할 수 있는 중요한 통로가 될 수 있다는 확신을 갖게 되었다. 더욱이 미국 덴버 신학교에서 오래 전부터 실시하여 온 멘토링 프로그램을 벤치마킹한 결과 교수와 학생, 그리고 지역 사회의 경건한 크리스천 리더들을 적절하게 연결시켜 멘토링 과정을 통해 양육할 수 있다면 단순한 학교생활 적응 프로그램이 아닌 통전적인 멘토링으로 정착될 수 있을 것이다. 통전적인 멘토링은 학생의 신체적, 정신적, 지적, 감정적, 관계적, 사회 문화적, 그리고 영적인 필요를 채워 줄 수 있어야 한다. 이 점을 염두에 두고 이 논문은 바람직한 멘토링 프로그램을 위한 시스템을 제안하였다. 이것이 현실적으로 정착되면 멘토링을 통하여 차세대 리더인 각 학생의 삶의 양태가 온전히 형성되고 지속적으로 개혁되어 나감으로 예수 그리스도의 복음 전파와 하나님 나라를 구현하는 생명 선교적 삶을 추구할 수 있을 것으로 확신한다.
