This research explores the mobile video-phone usage experiences among early adopters to understand the social and cultural significance of this new service. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 college students who uses mobile video-phone on a regular basis and
their parents who communicate with their children via video phone. The findings of the research can be summarized as the following. Firstly, the mobile video-phone is utilized by the interviewees based on the closeness of their personal relationship with communication partners which is, in turn, reinforced by the video-phone usage. Secondly, the context of usage is conceptualized as “transparency” of physical location and spatial information. In addition to the immediacy and mobility of mobile phone, such transparency transforms the usage patterns of mobile phone among interviewees to maintain their control over communication.
Finally, the video-phone enables users to experience changes in their speech patterns with the observation and evaluation of both verbal and non-verbal messages delivered via video-phone. In conclusion, the interviewees in general agree that mobile video-phone is creating its own
sphere as a new form of technology-mediated extension of face-to-face communication. Such findings are expected to contribute to the better understanding of the individual usage patterns of mobile video-phone and its social functions.

이 연구는 영상통화 이용자들의 통화 이용의 특성을 분석하고, 이에 따른 개인적, 사회적 변화에 관한 이론적 토대를 마련하기 위한 탐색적 정보를 제공하고자 하는 목적으로 행해졌다. 이를 위해 영상통화를 이용하는 20대 대학생 10명과 그들의 주통화대상인 부모 중 한명을 선택해 10명, 총 20명을 대상으로 심층면접을 실시하였다. 이 연구의 결과는 다음과 같은 몇 가지 차원에서 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 이용자들은 커뮤니케이션의 대상의 차원에서 가족과 동성/이성 친구 등 친밀한 관계에서 영상통화를 이용하며 이를 통해 친밀감이 더욱 강화되는 반면, 친밀하지 않은 관계에서는 거절의 기능도 강하게 작용함을 보여 주었다. 둘째, 영상통화는 커뮤니케이션 상황의 차원에서 휴대전화의 음성통화가 갖고 있는 이동성과 즉시성을 더욱 강화시켰을 뿐 아니라, 공간적, 시각적 정보의 제공으로 인한 상황의 “투명성”을 제공하고 있다. 이로 인해 이용자들은 거절의 강화를 포함하여 이용 상황의 통제를 잃지 않기 위한 시도를 하는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 이용자들은 자신과 상대방의 언어적, 비언어적 메시지 전달 방식을 관찰, 평가할 수 있는 기술적 특성과 음성통화에 비해 높은 주목도와 집중도로 인해 영상통화 이용을 통해 발음과 발성, 음색, 어휘 등의 언어적 측면과 이미지 등 비언어적 측면에서 음성통화와는 다른 변화를 경험하였다고 답하였다. 이 연구는 휴대전화의 영상통화 경험의 특성을 커뮤니케이션 대상, 상황, 메시지 전달 방식의 측면에서 살펴본 탐색적 연구로 이를 바탕으로 영상통화의 개인적, 사회적 기능과 활용 방식에 관한 보다 실증적이고 깊이 있는 검증에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
