This study explores the ways in which debate type and instructors’ role influence Web-based online debates. For this research, 36 students enrolled in the journalism department’s course, “Online Journalism,” at a university in a southern province in Korea were selected
for analysis. Findings from two different debates in debate rooms within a cyber classroom environment made in a university homepage suggest that opinion-based debate allows a small number of of people to lead the debates while goal-oriented debate offers a great number of people more chances to participate in the debates. Thus, it is a necessity to select goal-oriented debate topics, rather than opinion-based ones, to make more people participate in debates. Also, findings indicate that the numbers of debate participant and produced message tend to grow along with instructor’s increased educational role in terms of providing feedback to maintain debates within the given topic’s boundaries, rather than instructor’s presiding role. Furthermore, in the case of online debate using Webs in combination with instructors’ educational role, utilizing
goal-oriented topics, rather than opinion-based topics,&nb sp;is more useful to make debates more active.

본 연구는 토론주제의 유형과 교수자의 역할이 웹 기반 온라인 토론에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 규명하기 위한 것이다. 이를 위하여 지방소재 대학교 언론학과 전공과 목인 ‘온라인저널리즘’ 수강생 36명을 대상으로 학교 홈페이지의 가상강의실에 마련된 토론방을 활용하여 실시된 두 차례의 토론과정을 통하여 나타난 결과 개인의 생각을 논리적으로 전개해야 한다는 부담을 갖게 되는 의견제시형 토론 주제에 대해서는 소수가 토론을 주도한 반면 목표지향적인 주제에 대해서는 다수가 토론에 참여한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 따라서 보다 많은 사람들이 토론에 참여하도록 하기 위해서는 의견제시형 주제보다는 목표지향적 주제를 선정하는 것이 바람직하다 할 것이다. 또 온라인 토론 참가자 수와 생산된 메시지 수는 교수자가 사회적 역할에만 충실한 유형에 비해 토론 참여자의 질문에 대한 응답이나 과제에 대한 피드백을 제공하고 토론이 주제에서 벗어나지 않도록 교수자의 교육적 역할이 작용한 유형에서 더 많이 나타나는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 또 웹을 활용한 온라인 토론에서 교수자가 교육적 역할을 담당해야 하는 경우라면 의견제시형 주제보다는 목표지향적인 주제를 활용하는 것이 토론의 활성화에 도움이 되는 것으로 분석되었다.
