This study analyzes the components of Hangeul code & Hangeul syllables and compares the
typefaces of text font in terms of 7 syllables (서, 이, 자, 균, 화, 원, 된). Hangeul code consists of
input code, processing code and output code. Unlike the Roman alphabet, the basic principles
of Hangeul font design lie in ① Frequency curve ② Leeks curve and ③ Accumulation curve.
'Frequency curve' shows the correlation between the number of syllables in a font and its
frequency of appearance. Frequency curve and accumulation curve decide the number of completed syllables in Hangeul output code. 'Leek curve' shows the correlation between the number of phonemes in a font and the elegance of the typeface consisting the corresponding number of phonemes. Leeks curve decides the number of combination types and the
number of phonemes for combination in Hangeul output code.
Knowledge on & practice of the three steps consisting of base drawing, typeface design and
digital font design are indispensible for the production of Hangeul font for fontography.
In the design of Hangeul code for fontography and Hangeul font for typography, it should be
remembered that 'Hangeul' is alphabet writing based on phonemes and that syllables each of which contains an initial sound, a medial vowe (& final consonant) are constituted first to
structure a word. These facts should be thoroughly understood for the design of Hangeul code and fonts which fully reflect the nature of combination in Hangeul and express 11,172 syllables in Hangeul.
