The Meaning of ‘Home’ in Woo Gwang-hoon’s Novels Choi, Byeong-Woo The objective of the present study is to explain the meaning of the hometown in Woo Gwang-hoon, a Korean-Chinese writer. A hometown is an object of yearning felt commonly by people who left their birthplace and are living in a foreign land. When those who were born in a country where people form a close community surrounded by nature move to a modernized urban area, they miss their hometown, and diasporas try to restore their identity through their nostalgia for the homeland. Woo Gwang-hoon was born in China but is a second‐generation Korean whose father left the homeland, and cherished nostalgia for the old community of his hometown Yanji before it was modernized. In his works, however, ‘the hometown’ is not described clearly. The farm village is depicted as a place stricken with poverty and a space to be escaped from, and Yanji is described as a modernized den of desire and depravity. Such a consciousness of hometown expressed by Woo Gwang-hoon may be another expression of the double identity of Korean-Chinese.

이 논문은 중국 조선족 작가 우광훈의 소설에 나타난 고향의 의미를 해명하는데 그 목적이 있다. 고향은 태어나 성장한 곳을 떠나 타지에서 생활하는 인간들이 공통으로 느끼는 그리움의 대상이다. 자연 속에서 공동체적인 삶을 영위하던 시골에서 태어나 자란 사람들이 근대화된 도시로 이주해 생활하면서 고향에 대한 그리움을 갖게 되고, 디아스포라된 사람들이 떠나온 고향에 대한 그리움을 통해 자신의 아이덴티티를 회복하려 하는 것 등이 그 좋은 예이다. 우광훈은 중국에서 태어나 자랐지만 아버지 세대에 고국을 떠나 디아스포라된 중국 조선족 2세대이며, 고향인 연길이 도시화하면서 공동체 의식이 살아 있던 옛 모습에 대한 그리움을 간직한 작가이다. 그러나 그의 작품에서 ‘고향’은 분명한 모습을 드러내 보이지 않는다. 농촌은 가난으로 찌들어 탈출해야 할 공간으로 그려져 있고, 연길은 도시화되어 욕망과 타락이 들끓는 곳으로 그려져 있을 뿐이며, 한국에 있는 아버지의 고향은 타자의 고향으로 느껴질 뿐인 것이다. 우광훈이 보여주는 ‘고향’에 대한 이러한 의식은 중국 조선족이 갖고 있는 이중 정체성의 또 다른 표현이라 할 수 있다.
