Aesthetics of Novels and Ecological Imagination -With Emphasis on Hyo-Suk Lee’s and Cha, Bong-Jun This study is focused on understanding urgent ecological problems of the world and finding solutions through literary imagination. The ecological crisis of the Earth cannot be solved by science itself. We would be able to find some clues to solutions in the convergence of science and other fields of studies. Literary imagination is significant as it touches the essential realm, which is the awareness, and affects the awareness to lead to essential solutions. Ecological imagination emerged in modern Korean novels after the 1990s. However, this study focused on novels from the 1930s, especially the short stories by Hyo-Suk Lee that examines ‘the aesthetics of literature’ to discuss ecological imagination. Hyo -Suk Lee was devoted to exploring the aesthetics of literature more than anyone else. The aesthetics of his literature was related to saving those facing critical problems. Literary aesthetics of the writer is shown in his work as recognition of nature-friendly space and healthy sexual life. His awareness corresponds to the ecological imagination which we pursue today.

본 연구는 인류가 직면한 생태위기의 현상 속에서 문학적 상상력을 통한 문제인식과 그 해결방안의 모색에 초점을 두었다. 오늘날의 생태적 위기는 단지 과학의 힘만으로 해결하기에는 그 한계에 도달한 것이 사실이다. 이 문제는 과학을 비롯한 여러 학문과의 통합적 연계 속에서 그 해결의 실마리를 찾을 수 있을 것이다. 여기서 문학적 상상력은 보다 근본적 해결방안의 제시, 즉 문제를 야기한 인간의 인식 전환이라는 매우 근원적 부분에 대한 통찰을 보여준다는 점에서 의미가 있을 것이다. 한국의 현대소설이 본격적인 의미에서의 생태학적 상상력을 나타내기 시작한 것은 90년대 이후의 일이다. 그러나 본고는 1930년대의 소설, 그 가운데서도 ‘문학의 심미성’을 통해 생태학적 상상력의 일면을 확인할 수 있는 이효석의 단편소설에 주목하고자 한다. 이효석은 그 누구보다도 문학의 심미성에 심혈을 기울인 작가인데, 그가 주창한 문학의 심미성은 문제적 상황에 직면한 인간을 구원하는 보다 높은 수준의 방편이었다. 작가의 문학적 심미성은 자연친화적 공간 인식, 건강한 성적 생명력 등을 통해 작품 속에 구체화되고 있는데, 이러한 작가의 인식은 오늘날 우리가 주목하고자 하는 생태학적 상상력의 또 다른 일면과 맞닿고 있음을 발견할 수 있다.
