Current State and Prospect of Studies on Lee Hyo-Seok’s Literature Lee, Keum-Ran The year of 2007 was the centennial anniversary of the author Lee Hyo-seok’s birth. Believing that it would be meaningful to review the previous studies on his literature and reestablish his status in the literary history in the centennial anniversary of his birth, this study set out to examine the trends in researches focusing on his aesthetic consciousness based on the contemporary evaluations, which were the starting point of the criticisms of his literature. As an author, Lee created the world of “aesthetic appreciation” and “love of beauty” in his literary works during the dark times of the Japanese rule. It’s essential to discuss his aesthetic consciousness since he believed “The aesthetic roles of literature are the only means to save man from disillusion.” There have been ongoing discussions about his aesthetic consciousness with contrasting positive and negative evaluations. Attempting to fragment those discussions further, the study reviewed the discussions about his West-orientedness and exoticism as his disposition as a writer and his lyricism, nature, and awareness of sex as his aesthetic consciousness reflected in his works. Although there have been enough discussions about “how the major characteristics of Lee’s literature are manifested,” there is a long way to go before granting meanings based on the overall outlook on his literature. In future study, they need to investigate “why” he chose his aesthetic consciousness in addition to “how it’s manifested and what meanings it has.”

2007년은 작가 이효석의 탄생 100주년이 되는 해이다. 이에 본고는 기존 연구 현황을 한 번쯤 돌아보고, 그의 문학사적 위상을 재정립하고자 한다. 이를 위해 이효석 문학 비평의 기점을 이루는 당대 평가를 기초 작업으로, 그동안 이효석 문학 연구의 주 경향인 그의 미의식에 초점을 둔 연구물들에 대한 동향을 파악해 보고자 한다. 작가 이효석은 일제 암흑기에 그의 문학을 ‘심미’, ‘탐미’의 세계로 주조해 나간다. “문학의 審美役만이 환멸에서 인간을 구해내는 높은 방법”이라는 의식을 가진 작가의 미의식에 대한 논의는 그간 긍정과 부정의 상반된 평가 속에서 지속적으로 이루어졌다. 따라서 본고에서는 이를 더 세분화하여 작가적 성향으로서의 서구 지향성－엑조티시즘에 대한 논의와 작품에 투영된 미의식으로서의 서정성, 자연, 성의식에 대한 기존 논의를 살펴볼 것이다. 지금까지 논의를 종합해 보면, 전반적으로 이효석 문학의 주요 특성이 “어떻게 나타나 있는지”에 대한 논의는 충분하지만, 연구 결과를 이효석 문학의 전체적인 조망 속에서 의미부여 하는 작업에 있어서는 아직 미흡하다. 향후 논의는 그의 미의식이 “어떻게 나타나고 있으며, 그 의미가 무엇인지”를 넘어, 작가는 “왜” 그것을 선택했는지에 대한 연구도 진행되어야 할 것이다.
