This paper looks into the performance of two professional conference interpreters interpreting different segments from a speech delivered by one speaker. Based on an analysis of the sample data, the study defines segmentation strategy as follows: act of cutting up the source speech into meaning units or segments, as signaled by the speaker with the use of the falling and rising intonation, fillers, pauses and certain words, expressions, phrases and grammar structure. The study suggests that the meaning units in SI can take many different forms. It can take the form of what would be equivalent to a complete sentence, if it were in writing, ending with a full stop or a falling intonation in this case. Length does not seem to matter that much. It can also be as incomplete as it can be with only one or several words, without a subject or a verb. How the interpreter creates his/her target delivery using the segmentation strategy will need further analysis. A preliminary analysis from the sample data used for this study suggests that the key in re-expression for the target delivery lies in the use of a) Korean verb and its ending and b) a natural command of the intonation.
