The purposes of this study are the analysis of elegant and abstruse works of Merce unningham among the second generation composer in America modern dance and the consideration of choreographic style in her dancing. For accomplishing these purposes, this study considered the theory of dance, choreographic style and "Winterbranch" and "Summer Space" that are his main works. M. Cunningham's works has been shown the various changes and experimental trend in composing. Especially, he delivered the meaning of works through the moving body instead of representing some story.He has continuously explored the pure body movement and its possibility for the past forty years and has been evaluated as the composer who built his own unique dance theories. The following results are the consideration on his choreographic style.
First, three dance theories established by him are the use of chance and indefinite materials, techniques on stage and several performance components. In the time and space, the continuous body movement is emphasized.
Second, his choreographic style is based on the movements like walking, running, and jumping as a ballet style and these movements, separated with music, lighting and equipment ompletely, transfer the meaning of action through the interaction.
Finally, the characteristics in "Winter branch" and "Summer Space" are not only reflecting his three dancing theories, but also showing that the body movement in time and space is the essence of dancing.

본 연구의 목적은 미국 현대무용의 제2세대 출신의 안무가들 중에서 지성적 이면서도 난해한 머스 커닝햄의 주요 작품들을 분석하여 그의 무용에 나타난 안무 스타일을 고찰하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이런 목적을 달성하기 위한 연구 대상으로서 커닝햄의 무용 이론, 안무스타일 그리고 주요 작품인 겨울가지 (Winterbranch)와 여름공간(Summer space)등으로 나뉘어 고찰 하였다.
커닝햄의 무용은 안무적으로 다양한 변화와 실험적인 경향을 보여 왔으며 특히, 어떤 줄거리를 표현하지 않는 대신에 움직이는 신체를 통해서 작품의 의미를 전달하고자 하였음을 알 수 있다. 그는 특히 지난 40년동안 작품을 만들어 오는 동안에 순수한 신체상의 움직임과 그 가능성에 대해 꾸준히 탐구해 왔으며, 이런 과정을 통해서 그의 독특한 무용 이론을 확립해 온 안무가로서 평가를 받아 왔던 것이다.
첫째, 커닝햄이 확립한 3가지의 무용 이론은 기회와 불확정한 것들의 이용, 무대 공간에서의 테크닉 활용, 그리고 여러 가지 공연 요소의 이용 등이 있으며, 이것은 시간과 공간 속에서 연속적으로 움직이는 신체를 강조하고 있다.
둘째 커닝햄의 안무 스타일은 발레적이면서도 걷기, 딸리기, 뛰기와 같은 보행성 움직임을 토대로 작품을 만들고 있으며, 이런 움직임들은 음악, 조명 그리고 장치와는 완전히 개별적으로 존재 하는 가운데 상호간의 영향을 끼쳐서 동작의 의미를 전달하고 있다.
셋째, 그의 작품들인 겨울가지와 여름공간에 나타난 주요 안무적 특징은 그의 3가지 무용이론(무용에 있어서의 우연성, 열려진 공간으로서의 무대공간활용, 음악을 포함한 무대구성요소를 강조) 을 그대로 반영하고 있을 뿐 아니라 시간과 공간에서 움직이는 신체가 무용의 본질임을 보여주고 있다.
