The world that we live now is ruled by economic ideology rather than political one. Recently social recognition on the matter of democratization is more focused on economical democratization, that is, ‘how to solve the issues of economical polarization’ rather than political one.
Economic activities can be categorized into production and consumption in general. And although most students are the subject of economic activities and are the potential subject of production, they mostly belong to the subject of consumption in the course of completing school curricula and eventually come to participate in production for consumption for the rest of their lives. Thus, considering economic activities, production can be seen as a means of consumption. Infinite human need for consumption in the limitation of goods is the very need for consumption, and the purpose of productive activities lies in consumption, so the core of economic activities can be said to be in consumption.
Accordingly, in moral or ethics education which sets as an important goal to appropriately understand general ethical issues caused in these modern days with diverse ethical points of view and to have students acquire ability and attitude to solve those ethical issues reasonably as well as desirably, it is an essential goal to raise human beings that have a desirable consciousness of consumption as ethical consumers.
This report intends to examine the present status of consumer ethics education in the general selective subject, 『Civil Ethics』 at high school and 『Moral Education 2』 at junior-high school and to consider the necessity of education on ‘Ethical Consumption’ as an alternative to complement and overcome dehumanization in the capitalistic market economy.
