The recent discussions about the quality of education are closely related to the improvement of teachers' expertise, because the quality of teachers determines that of education. In this regard, the training system for cultivating great teachers is very important. The studies about the importance of teachers in Korean society were found in several documents, however, it was after the Enlightenment that the teachers training was institutionalized. According to the new school system of the Gabo Reform, Hanseong normal school was established, which was the first official teachers training institution in the history of Korean education and fostered teachers who would implement modern primary education in elementary schools. In this thesis I tried to investigate the modern teachers training system which was the start of Korean teachers training system. With this view, I intend to examine some suggestions in modern education through analyzing the background and the purpose of teachers training, the role and the duty of teachers, the curriculum of the program.

교사의 역할은 그 시대의 가치나 사회적 요구를 반영한다. 최근 교육의 질을 강조하면서 실제 교육현장에서 학생들을 가르치는 교원의 전문성 신장이 강조되고 있다. 그 이유는 교사교육의 질이 교육의 질을 결정하기 때문이다. 이런 점에서 우수 교사양성을 위한 교원양성제도가 중요하다. 한국사회에 있어서 교직의 중요성에 대한 논의는 여러 문헌을 통해 나타나 있으나 교원양성이 제도적으로 이루어진 것은 갑오개혁 이후이다. 1895년 최초 교원양성기관인 한성사범학교가 초등교원 양성을 목적으로 설립되었다. 그리고 중등교원양성은 해방 이후인 1946년 국립서울대학교 설치령에 의해 서울대학교 사범대학이 설립되었으며, 유치원 교원양성은 1915년 2년제 과정이 이화유치원 사범과다(김남성 외, 2005 : 258-9). 본 연구에서는 근대 교원양성체제의 배경과 실제를 바탕으로 한국교원교육사를 재조명하는데 의의를 둔다. 이를 위해 교원양성의 배경, 교원양성교육의 목적, 교원의 역할과 임무, 교원양성교육과정 등을 분석하여 현대교육사적 시사점을 밝히고자 한다.
