Estimation of Base Shear Yield Strength of Shear-Type Structures Considering Allowable Ductility

Most structures are deformed beyond the limit of linearly elastic behavior when subjected to strong ground shaking. Thus the earthquake response of structures deforming into their nonlinear range is of central importance in earthquake engineering. In this study, it is intended to identify that the heightwise variation of story ductility demands in a structure designed for the lateral force distribution specified by UBC(Uniform Building Code) and KBC(Korea Building Code). First, property of ductility is studied by comparing and examining ductility demands and allowable ductility of structure. Then, modified base shear yield strength, in conjunction with heightwise
distribution of UBC and KBC force, is estimated to ensure that the story ductility demands do not exceed the allowable ductility.
