This study explored Korean adolescents' mobile phone use. A survey was conducted with a nationwide sample of 3,617 adolescents. The data were analyzed using the descriptive statistics. Almost all the respondents(99.3%) used the mobile phone for the text-messaging mainly. Many adolescents fell victim to 'text messages from bothersome partners' and 'unwanted spam mail.' But a few experienced 'exclusion from a peer group.' On the other hand, some adolescents took photos of others without prior agreement, which was an invasion of privacy. The most serious problem regarding mobile phone usage was 'text-messaging dependency' and 'attention deficit.' Other problems included abnormal phone bill, poor school performance/poor grade, violation of grammar. The five major factors contributing to the mobile phone dependency were anxiety/paranoia, overuse, text-messaging dependency, auditory hallucination, preference of text-messaging. The first factor was text-massaging, which reflected the problem of mobile phone usage among the adolescents. The mobile phone overuse was the least contributing factor. The three major factors explaining the results of mobile usage were attention deficit/poor school performance/poor grade, decrease in social gathering/communication with parents, decrease in stress.

본 연구는 청소년의 휴대전화 이용행태를 탐구하는데 목적을 두었다. 본 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 전국의 청소년 3,617명을 대상으로 교실에서 설문조사를 통해 거둬들인 자료를 SPSS 12.0 통계프로그램을 사용하여 분석한 결과 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 첫째, 전체조사대상자 3,607명 중 휴대전화를 이용하고 있는 청소년은 3,581명으로 99.3%에 달했고, 청소년의 휴대전화 이용용도 중 문자가 가장 높았다. 둘째, 청소년의 휴대전화 피해경험은 ‘귀찮은 상대의 문자메시지’와 ‘원하지 않는 스팸메일’이 가장 높게 나타났고 ‘집단 괴롭힘 경험’은 가장 낮았다. 청소년의 휴대전화 가해경험은 ‘상대방의 동의 없는 사진촬영’이 가장 높게 나타나 휴대전화로 인한 사생활 침해의 가능성이 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 청소년의 휴대전화 이용에 있어 문제점으로 문자의존과 집중력 저하가 가장 높게 나타났고, 과다한 요금, 성적하락, 언어파괴 등의 순으로 나타났다. 셋째, 청소년들의 휴대전화 의존 요인은 불안/집착, 사용과다, 문자메시지 의존, 환청, 문자선호라는 5개의 요인으로 나뉘어졌으며 ‘문자선호’ 요인이 가장 높게 나타나 휴대전화 이용의 문제점과 같은 양상을 보였고 ‘사용과다’는 가장 낮게 나타났다. 넷째, 청소년들의 휴대전화 이용결과는 산만/성적하락, 교제 감소/부모대화 감소, 스트레스 감소라는 3개의 요인으로 나타났다.
