The mass media had very much influence upon common citizens because of its own characteristics to encounter copycat crimes all the time. Therefore, this study examined types and cases of the copycat crimes that were produced by mass media, and it investigated not only functions of sound mass media in the future but also programs taking actions against the crimes. Then, the copycat crime did not define criminal concepts, types and characteristics definitely and precedent researches were done within very much limited scope to be difficult to investigate clearly. The study classified types of the copycat crime by social learning, low self control and differential identification to introduce typical case being suitable to each type. The study suggest five of preventative measures against copycat crimes as follow: Firstly, warning against copycat crime through mass media, secondly, better reporting practice of mass media, thirdly, strict control on harmful Internet media, fourthly, preliminary education for the youth as well as behavioral correction of the youth who committed copycat crime, fifthly, strict punishment on the adult who committed serious copycat crime. The copycat crime might create more social disturbance than other crimes to do direct harm to public peace. Therefore, home, schools, police, criminal and justice authority, and mass media production and distribution businesses, etc should look for political actions.

본 연구에서는 대중매체로 인해 발생한 대표적 모방범죄의 유형과 사례를 살펴봄으로써,향후 건전한 대중매체의 기능을 모색하고,아울러 모방범죄에 대응하기 위한 구체적인 방안들에 대하여 살펴보고자 하였다. 모방범죄는 범죄의 개념이나 유형, 특성 등이 명확히 규정되지 않을 뿐만 아니라 선행연구 또한 대단히 제한적인 영역에서 수행되었기 때문에 명확한 분석이 쉽지 않다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서는 연구자의 개인적 분석을 통해 모방범죄의 유형을 사회적 학습에 의한 모방범죄,낮은 자기통제력에 의한 모방범죄,차별적 동일시에 의한 모방범죄로 구분하여 설명하였으며, 각각의 유형에 적합한 대표적 사례를 소개하였다. 한편, 이와 같은 모방범죄에 대한 구체적인 대응책으로는 총 세 가지 범주에서 여섯가지정도의 세부대책으로 제시될 수 있을 것이다. 첫째, 모방범죄를 예방하기 위해서는 대중매체를 통한 모방범죄의 경고가 필요하며, 둘째, 대중매체의 보도관행 개선이 필요하다. 그리고 셋째는 인터넷 유해매체에 대한 철저한 단속이 필요하며, 넷째, 청소년에 대한 사전교육을 통해 자기통제력을 강화해야 할 것이다. 끝으로 모방범죄자에 대한 개별적 대응으로 모방범죄를 저지르는 청소년에 대한 행동수정을, 중대한 성인 모방범죄자에 대해서는 보다 엄격한 처벌을 통하여 모방범죄에 대응할 수 있어야 할 것이다.
