As polygraph examination makes use of human psychology, a variety of factors affect the results of it. Thus, many requirements have to be satisfied in advance to test the subject's statements. Up to the present, however, there has been little prior research on which factors affect polygraph examination eligibility. So this study has attempted to find the factors and improve the rate of successful examination. This study utilized the results of 248 polygraph examinations that had been employed to investigate traffic accidents in a provincial police agency in 2006. From the polygraph examination reports, factors relating to the subjects and the cases could be identified and a chi-square test was performed in order to explore relationships between the factors and polygraph examination eligibility. The results of the chi-square test revealed that there was no relationship between eligibility and factors relating to the subjects. However, factors relating to the cases, such as the types of traffic accidents and accompanying disadvantages and the duration between the accidents and polygraph examination, were associated with polygraph examination eligibility. The findings of the study suggest that the cases in which there is either very small or no disadvantage for false statements should be screened out from polygraph examination. And the findings also show that polygraph examination should be conducted in investigation's early stages to reduce the rate of unsuccessful examination.

폴리그라프검사는 인간의 심리를 이용하기 때문에 다양한 요인이 검사결과에 영향을 미치게 되고, 따라서 진술의 진위여부를 판단하기 위해서는 사전에 여러 가지 조건이 충족되어야 한다. 하지만 현재까지 우리나라에서는 어떠한 요인이 폴리그라프검사의 판단여부에 영향을 미치는지에 대하여 밝혀진 바가 거의 없었다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 폴리그라프검사의 판단여부에 영향을 미치는 요인을 밝혀 검사의 판단가능성을 제고하고자 하였다. 본 연구에서는 한 지방경찰청이 2006년 한 해 동안 교통사고조사를 위하여 실시한 248건의 폴리그라프검사를 연구자료로 사용하였다. 폴리그라프 검사결과서로부터는 피검사자의 조건에 관한 정보와 사건의 조건에 관한 정보를 알 수 있었고 이러한 요인들이 검사의 판단여부와 어떤 관계를 가지는지를 분석하기 위하여 카이제곱검정이 실시되었다. 분석결과 피검사자의 조건과 관련된 요인은 폴리그라프검사의 판단여부와 관계가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 사건의 조건과 관련된 요인으로써 사고의 유형 및 검사결과에 따르는 불이익의 종류와 교통사고 발생 후 검사까지 걸리는 시간이 폴리그라프검사의 판단여부와 관계가 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이러한 분석결과는 거짓진술에 대한 불이익이 매우 적거나 없는 경우는 판단 불능이 나올 가능성이 높으므로 검사대상에서 제외하는 것이 바람직하다는 점을 시사한다. 또 본 연구의 분석결과는 어떠한 사건에 폴리그라프검사가 필요하다고 판단되면 수사의 초기 단계에 신속히 검사를 의뢰하는 것이 폴리그라프검사의 판단가능성을 제고할 수 있음도 보여주고 있다.
