I would like to examine artists who represent early Korean modern art. Among them, three artists from Gangwondo-Sookeun Park, Jinkyu Kwon and Woonsang Jang-are the ones I will discuss here.
Sookeun Park is the most distinguished artist in Korean modern art. His life was a stereotype of an unfortunate fate of 'modern artists'. He was not able to secure his position in spite of his age and excellent career because of his lack of education. However he managed to become one of the most well-known Korean artist in the international artworld for his unique paintings who resemble buckwheat flower field or rough surface of granite.
Jinkyu Kwon, a sculptor, was born in Hamheung, but he was educated in Chuncheon. Chuncheon has always been the place he spent his adolescent years in Jinkyu Kwon's memory as much as he is proud of his exceptional school record. He is now remembered by everyone through his terra cotta man figures-which is made with clay and becomes brownish-red after baking. Kwon is also famous for his technique of giving unique texture to the surface of his works.
In general, various factors mentioned as datum points of Korean modern art were of a bit of account as a first step forward. Woonsang Jang was educated with the earliest higher education system which was based on modernized art. Hence, his degree of maturity in modernity is out of the common. Jang is also relatively free from the orthodoxy dispute which limited his senior artists. Recently, his paintings of beautiful women drawn with delicate and exquisite brushstrokes and light gradation are attracting even more attention.

한국 현대미술의 초기를 대표하는 작가들, 그 중에서 강원 출신 작가 셋을 살펴보려 한다. 박수근과 권진규와 장운상이 그들이다.
박수근은 한국 현대미술에서 가장 뚜렷이 부각되는 작가다. 그는 ‘현대적 작가’들의 불우한 운명도 전형적으로 보여준다. 근대화된 미술교육을 받지 못한 박수근은 상당한 경력과 나이에도 불구하고 작가라는 지위조차 보장받지 못했다. 그렇지만 메밀 꽃밭 같은 또는 화강석의 거친 표면 같은 화면으로 국제적으로 가장 알려진 한국의 대표작가가 된다.
조각가 권진규는 함흥에서 태어났지만 춘천에서 학업을 이었다. 뛰어나 성적으로 졸업한 것을 소중히 여길 만큼 그에게 춘천은 중요한 성장기를 보낸 것으로 기억되는 곳이다. 흙으로 빚어 불에 구우면 불게 변하는 테라코타, 이제 그는 그런 테라코타 인물상의 작가로 모두에게 기억되고 있다. 독특한 질감을 내는 작품 표면 처리 방식도 유명하다.
한국 현대미술의 기점들로 언급되는 여러 가지는 대체로 처음 발을 내딛는 정도로 중시되었던 것들이다. 장운상은 근대화된 미술에 기초한 한국 최초의 고등교육을 받아 현대성의 완성 정도가 남다르다. 전배작가들에게 한계였던 정통성 시비에서도 비교적 자유롭다. 섬세하고 고운 필선과 밝은 색의 농담으로 그린 미인화가 최근 더욱 주목받고 있다.
