'Post-emancipation situation' (1945-1948) was a special period in our national history. Just as Korea was emancipated from Japan, the US and Soviet forces advanced each into southern and northern part of the Korean peninsula. Thus, 'Korea was emancipated from Japan' but 'had still to be liberated from foreign forces'. During this period, Baek Nam-woon was active in propagating his socialism ideology in the region occupied by the US forces or South Korea. This study reviews his 'Confederative New Democracy' theory suggested as nation's liberation, focusing on his perception of 'liberalism' and 'communism'. In a nutshell, he argued that neither American liberalism nor Soviet communism did not befit the post-emancipation situation requiring 'nation's liberation' again and therefore, that a new Korea should have 'a form of government with national capitalists and proletariats bound with each other', and furthermore, that a new Korean government should revive 'history, culture and ethics of Chosun' in a democratic way. His ideological tendency called 'Chosun Marxist' during the Japanese colonial rule was maintained still in the space of our post-emancipation.

‘해방정국(1945-1948)’은 한민족 역사상 특별한 시기이다. ‘해방’과 함께 남과 북에 각각 미군과 소련군이 진주하면서 ‘일제로부터 해방은 했지만’ ‘외세로부터의 해방은 여전히 남은’ 시기였던 것이다. 이 논문은 미군이 진주한 지역에서 활동했던 남조선의 ‘사회주의자’ 백남운이 민족해방론으로 제시하였던 ‘연합성 신민주주의론’에 대해 그 핵심 구성요소인 ‘민주정치’, ‘민주경제’, ‘민주문화(도덕)’ 논의의 내용과 성격을 중심으로 자유주의와 공산주의에 대한 그의 인식을 중심으로 검토하였다. 결론적으로 그것은, 미국식의 자유주의나 소련식의 공산주의는 다시 ‘민족해방’을 성취해야 하는 당시 조선의 단계상 적합하지 못하며 ‘민족적 자산가와 무산계급이 연대하는 형태’여야 하며, 나아가 ‘조선역사, 조선문화, 조선식 도덕’ 등의 민주적 재전유 형태여야 한다고 하였다. 요컨대 그는 맑스주의자 이전에 상당 부분 자유주의자적 요소와 조선주의자적 요소를 구비하고 있었으며, 전자 덕분에 결국 그는 당시 정국에서 좌우파 합작으로 주도하는 맑시스트가 될 수 밖에 없었다면, 후자 덕분에 일제시대 ‘조선적 맑스주의자’라는 호칭을 획득했던 그가 해방정국에서도 여전히 그 위상을 확보할 수 있었다고 하겠다.
