This paper looks into the delayed marriage and other related aspects, the major discord in the novel . One of the most fundamental causes for the marriage delay between Gyeilji and Sunjikso is the confrontation of characteristics and self-respect between Gyedongyeong and Sungyeonghwa. Gyedongyeong refuses to acknowledge Sungyeonghwa, who was inferior to him in the past, despite the changed situation. Therefore, the lowborn Gyedongyeong despised Sungyeonghwa as a snob, while Sungyeonghwa hated the arrogance of Gyedongyeong. Consequently, Gyedongyeong stuck to the success and marriage of his son for the restoration of his self-esteem, while Sungyeonghwa adhered to a further wealth and fame, which are the foundation of her own pride. It was the arrangement of characters who do not deny the success and riches that made possible the development of discord in the novel . In addition, the excellent description of psychological states of the characters is successfully reveals the internal side of each character. Hurts in the pride of Gyedongyeong are not presented clearly and concretely. But Gyedongyeong’s inferiority complex and his efforts to overcome it could be found through the roundabout discourse as well as the configuration and behavior of the characters. Such aspects of discord, therefore, could be cited as the main features of the novel . Such aspects also reveal the features of as a “wit-and-beauty” novel, which is at the same time a love story.

본고는 <紅白花傳>의 주요 갈등인 혼사지연과 관련된 면모에 중점을 두고 고찰하였다. 계일지와 순직소의 혼사를 지연시키는 가장 근본적인 원인은 계동영과 순경화의 성격과 자존심 대결에서 비롯한다. 계동영은 자신보다 열등했던 순경화를 상황이 바뀌었음에도 인정하려 들지 않았다. 이로 인해 빈천한 계동영은 순경화를 속물적 인간으로 천시하였고, 부귀한 순경화는 계동영의 거만함을 꺼려하였다. 그러므로 계동영은 스스로 상처받았다고 여기는 자존심 회복을 위하여 아들의 출세와 혼인에 집착하였으며, 순경화는 자신의 자존심에 토대가 되는 부귀에 더욱 집착한 것이다. <紅白花傳>에서 이러한 갈등이 전개될 수 있었던 것은 출세와 부귀를 부정하지 않는 등장인물의 배치에 있다. 또 다른 하나는 탁월한 심리묘사를 통해 인물 내면의 면면을 지적해내고 있다는 점에 있다. 아울러 계동영의 상처받은 자존심의 실상을 구체적이고 명시적으로 제시하지 않고 있지만, 그 인물 형상과 행동 그리고 둘러서 말하는 화자의 표현을 통해서 계동영의 열등감과 그 회복 노력을 읽을 수 있다. 이같은 점이 <紅白花傳> 갈등의 특징이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 갈등을 중심으로 본 <紅白花傳>은 애정전기의 모습을 띠면서도 재자가인소설의 면모를 여실히 지니고 있는 작품임 동시에 초기 장편소설로 이어지는 소설사의 맥을 잇고 있는 작품이라 할 수 있다.
