This paper aims to research into grammar terminologies in the field of Japanese education by investigating teaching materials of reference books for the study of Japanese which were used between 1890s and 1918.
This period is the time when Japanese learning began among the common Korean people, and so this period is very important in the field of Japanese education. At that time, reference books for the study of Japanese were the core learning materials for Japanese education. Therefore, to describe Japanese grammar education of the period, it is necessary to research into the reference books for the study of Japanese of the time. It is necessary for the research of
Japanese education development, and important for the ongoing development of Japanese education to make a study of early Japanese grammar education in Korea.
This paper investigates grammar terminologies used in Japanese reference books for native Korean speakers. This papers also compares and examines these terminologies, and then analyzes and clarifies their differences and problems. These works of this paper will contribute to Japanese education in Korea and the contrastive studies between Korean and Japanese.
Most Japanese reference books of the time gave priority on conversation, but there were some Japanese reference books which were compiled focusing on grammar. The titles of such books include 'word dictionary', 'sentence dictionary', and 'grammar'. It is thought that these books were named after the famous books which were widely used in Japan at that time. This paper's
investigation of grammar terminologies is divided into two fields, namely 'parts of speech' and 'syntax'.
