This paper aims to analyze on the contents related to traditional culture in the elementary social studies through multicultural society and goal of traditional culture education. The contents related to traditional culture in social studies of forth grade account for 18.9% of all social studies texts. They place the focus on inculcating the students with attachment to our traditional culture. They are not good to bring up citizenship that understands objectively our traditional culture from multicultural perspectives and solves rationally problems of multicultural society. Thus in order to get over their the limitations we construct the contents for traditional culture education in the elementary social studies by multicultural perspectives.

본 연구는 다문화주의적 관점에서 4학년 사회과의 전통문화 관련 내용을 분석하고 다문화사회에 적합한 전통문화 교육내용의 구성 방향에 대해 고찰한 것이다. 다문화주의적 관점에서 분석한 결과에 의하면, 4학년 사회과에서 전통문화 관련 내용은 전체의 18.9%를 차지하였는데, 주로 전통생활, 놀이, 예술 등과 관련된 내용이고 전통사상과 관련된 내용은 거의 없었다. 전통문화 교육내용은 주로 단일민족과 단일문화에 기초하여 우리 문화유산의 과학성과 우수성을 부각시켜 애착심과 보존 태도를 주입하는데 초점을 맞추었다. 이러한 전통문화교육은 다문화주의적 관점에서 우리의 전통문화를 객관적으로 이해하고, 다문화사회의 문제를 합리적으로 해결하는 시민의 자질을 기르는데 적합하지 않다. 이런 한계를 극복하기 위해서는 전통문화교육은 다문화주의적 관점에서 우리와 다른 인종과 민족의 다양한 문화를 비교하여 이해함으로써 모든문화를 존중하고 공존하는 다문화적 정체성을 형성하는 내용으로 구성되어야 한다.
