Study on images of heroes in Lope's plays - focusing on tragicomedy, comedy, and tragedy
초록
영어
In approximately two thousand plays written by Lope during his entire literary life, there appear various types of characters. Among them, some keep a certain kind of personality in plays, creating typical character images. These typical characters become characters indispensable to contemporary plays with those of Lope’s, which are called ‘Teatro nacional’. In this paper, among such characters, we are going to take a closer look at various aspects of ‘galán’, a young hero who is always the central figure of events and plays the most important role in ending a play in most of Lope’s plays, in view of tragicomedy, comedy, and tragedy. First of all, one of the representative heroes of tragicomedy could be Alonso of El Caballero de Olmedo. Through him, Lope presents to the audience the typical image of ‘galán’ in the plays at the time. Among the plays of comedy, we have Teodoro from El perro del hortelano. Through his words and actions unlike galán’s, Lope shows how the comic mechanism works in plays. Lastly, through Federico from El castigo sin venganza, who resists tragic fate and fall a victim to it, Lope reveals that Aristotelian aesthetics clearly exists in his plays. Hence, the main goal of this paper is to categorize the types of heroes in three genres previously mentioned in Lope’s plays, and in the end, to give a better understanding of Lope and his contemporary writers.
