The present study examined the thematic characteristics of Korean-Chinese writer Woo Gwang-hoon’s early novels published before the establishment of diplomatic relation between Korea and China. The establishment of diplomatic relation between Korea and China was a big event that had a considerable impact on Korean-Chinese’s life. Thus, the present paper is an essay on how Korean-Chinese writers’ works changed surrounding the event. Major themes observed in Woo Gwang-hoon’s early novels include the exploration party’s life, experience of banishment to the farm, forlorn love with a Chinese girl and the experience in the mother’s old home during childhood. The four themes are recognized as turning points of Woo Gwang-hoon’s own life, and provide literary nourishment to him. In addition, they are considered the genuine values of Woo
Gwang-hoon’s early novels describing Korean-Chinese as a minority who, surrounded by Chinese in the multiracial country, live in cooperation and conflict with them and struggle to keep the national identity.

이 논문은 중국조선족 작가인 우광훈이 한중 수교 이전에 발표한 초기 소설들의 주제적 특성을 살펴 본 것이다. 한중수교는 중국조선족의 삶에 커다란 영향을 미친 사건인 바, 이 논문은 중국조선족 작가들의 작품이 이 사건을 전후하여 어떻게 변화하는가를 살피기 위한 시론에 해당한다. 우광훈의 초기 소설에는 탐사대 생활, 하방 체험, 한족 소녀와의 이루어지지 않은 사랑, 유년기 체험으로서 외가 등이 주된 주제적 경향으로 나타난다. 이러한 네 가지 주제는 우광훈 자신이 자신의 삶에서 커다란 계기로 인식하고 있는 사건들이며, 그의 문학적 자양이 되는 사건들이기도 하다. 그리고 이러한 주제들은 중국이라는 다민족 국가에서 한족에 둘러싸여 살아가면서 그들과 협조하고 갈등하며 살아가면서 민족적 정체성을 지키려는 소수민족으로서의 중국조선족들의 모습을 그려낸 것으로 우광훈 초기 소설이 지닌 진정한 가치라 하겠다.
