<옥루몽>은 19세기 전반, 조선인 남영로가 명나라 말을 배경으로 30년 안팎에 걸친 세월을 집중적으로 다룬 작품이다. 이에 비해 <삼국지>는 14세기 후반, 후한 말부터 진 초엽까지 97년간에 걸친 세월을 다루고 있다. <삼국지>가 ‘전쟁과 정치 이야기’이라면 <옥루몽>은 여성 삼인방을 전면에 내세운 ‘사랑과 전쟁과 정치의 이야기’이다.
<옥루몽>은 <삼국지>독서를 토대로, 남성주인공을 여성주인공으로 그 성(性)을 변형대치한다. <옥루몽>은 <삼국지>에 나온 삽화들을 확대 / 축소, 요약 / 부연, 강화 / 약화, 때로는 그 서사 일부를 문학적으로 대치한다. <옥루몽>에서 전개된 5번의 전쟁 이야기는 모두 <삼국지>에서 맹획의 칠종칠금 고사를 중첩․반복시켜 새로운 이야기로 만들어 나간 것이다.
<옥루몽>은 일면 <삼국지>와 비슷하지만 또 다르다. <옥루몽>은 <삼국지>에서는 거의 보이지 않던 남녀간의 사랑 이야기를 작품 전반에 배치한다. 무엇보다도 <삼국지>가 장년 또는 노년의 인물이 펼치는 전쟁과 권력 투쟁의 이야기라면 <옥루몽>은 소년과 낭자군이 중심이 된 사랑과 정치와 전쟁 이야기이다. 그리고 두 작품의 그 결말에서 <삼국지>는 인생무상, 허무주의를, <옥루몽>은 낙천적 세계인식, <삼국지>가 비교적 역사적 사실에 충실한 현실의 이야기라면 <옥루몽>은 현세의 일이되, 더 큰 세계(옥황상제와 관음보살 사는 백옥경)로 확대된 이야기다.
물론 <옥루몽>에 내재된 결함이 없지 않지만, <삼국지>독서를 토대로 만든 <옥루몽>은 종래까지 지켜오던 여성의 역할을 확대시켜 여성이야 말로 이 세상을 구원할 수 있는 존재임을 부각시켜주었다. 동시에 심층적이고 다양한 독서 경험이 또 하나의 낯익으면서도 낯선 문학작품으로 태어날 수 있음을 보여주었다.
