This study examined the existing study tendency about the nicknames to understand children's nicknames. The studies in the nicknames have been carried out on the linguistic approach, the psychiatric approach and social relationship approach. The linguistic approach focused on the origin of the nickname creation, the phonological and grammatical characteristic, and the purpose for communication. The psychiatric approach analyzed the psychiatric meaning
contained in the nicknames of the patients in a mental hospital and adolescents.
The social relationship approach studied the nicknames as the meaning endowment of the relationship through the nicknames, the formation and maintenance of social status, and the instrument that proclaims and emphasizes the standard of a group culture. The nickname is the manner that a child expresses his or her self-controlling world positively that he or she makes, and it reveals the logic and standard which their culture has. Through the manner that children use nicknames among their peers and the nickname itself, we can control children well and get a great help in understanding children. Therefore, the study is required that we look into the nickname reflected in the peer relationships more broadly and more deeply.

본 연구는 아동의 별명을 이해하기 위해, 기존에 이루어진 별명에 대한 연구동향을 살펴보았다. 별명에 대한 연구는 언어학적 접근, 정신의학적 접근, 사회관계적 접근으로 수행되어 왔다. 언어학적으로는 별명의 생성 유래와 음운·문법적 특성 및 의사전달을 위한 목적 등에 중점을 두었고, 정신의학적 접근은 정신병 환자 및 청소년의 별명에 담긴 사회 정신의학적 의미를 분석을 하였다. 사회관계적 접근으로는 대인 관계의 의미부여, 사회적 지위의 생성과 유지, 집단 문화의 기준을 선포하는 도구로서 별명을 연구하였다. 별명은 아동이 형성한 자율적인 세계를 적극적으로 표현하는 양식이며, 그들의 문화가 가진 논리와 기준을 드러내어 준다. 또래관계 속에서 아동들이 별명을 사용하는 방식과 별명 그 자체를 통해서 우리는 아동을 관리하고, 그들을 이해하는 데에 큰 도움을 받을 수 있다. 이에 현재 아동의 또래관계 속에 투영되는 별명을 보다 폭넓고 깊이 있게 살펴보는 연구가 요구된다.
