We would need a more thorough and considered theology of preaching as we have already entered into the 21st century. My theological reflection on the new theology of preaching grows out of the ecumenical perspective that current theologians in both Catholic and Protestant traditions help us rethink a theology of preaching in order to serve the church at worship into the 21st century. A theology of preaching for the next century needs to attend to theologies of preaching as we have received them through both our Catholic and Protestant traditions. They will need to attend to the relationship between the Word and the Sacraments, and between preaching and the whole range of Christian worship. Prior to this ecumenical approach, perhaps we are required not to decide in advance that the only way to suggest a new theology of preaching is by defending a theology of preaching in our tradition against the others.
The dramatic change that has been occurring in both Catholic and Protestant traditions in the theology of revelation in the twentieth century has crucial importance for our understanding of what was going on in the preaching event. The Reformation traditions, which have well developed theologies of preaching, have traditionally highlighted the power of the proclamation of the Word to convert sinful humanity. In the Catholic tradition where sacraments were emphasized as the locus of the encounter with God, preaching was often omitted from sacramental celebrations prior to the liturgical renewal of Vatican II. But in the context of the biblical and liturgical renewal of the past 30 years, theological resources for a theology of preaching drawn from the Catholic sacramental imagination have begun to emerge especially in the thought of Karl Rahner.
As the field of homiletics gropes for a renewed theological foundation in an age of ecumenical dialogue, both the dialectical imagination of the classic Reformation traditions and the sacramental imagination of the Catholic traditions have distinct contributions to make for a theology of preaching for the 21st century. Integrating the dialectical imagination as found in Karl Barth, Rudolph Bultmann and the new hermeneutic theologians with the sacramental imagination of Karl Rahner, we seek to provide ecumenical perspective on the theology of preaching for the next century. Our recognition of the strength of each tradition will provide a helpful bridge between the two.

에큐메니칼 대화의 시대가 열리기 시작하면서 과거의 설교신학의 기초를 갱신하고 새로운 설교신학을 제시하기 위해, 본 연구는 하나님과 인간 사이의 접촉점에 대한 개신교와 가톨릭의 고전적인 설교신학들의 장점들을 분석한다. 그 다음, 구체적으로 칼 바르트와 루돌프 불트만, 그리고 새로운 해석학 신학자들에서 발견되는 변증적 상상을 칼 라너를 중심으로 발견되는 성례전적 상상을 통합적으로 이해하여 에큐메니칼 설교신학을 위한 다리를 만든다.
