The Shibchoshi, “Ten Selected Poems”, is an anthology which records three hundred pieces of
hepta-syllabic poetry selected from thirty poets, twenty-six of the Tang period and four of the Silla
period. The anthology has selected each ten pieces from these thirty poets. Two kinds of versions
have been handed down. One of them is the Shibchoshi, which records only the original verses of
the poems, and the other, the Hyeobju Myeonghyeon Shibchoshi, “Ten Selected Poems from the
Wise with Annotations on the Side”, contains annotations made by an old Buddhist monk of
Shinyinjong “Spititual Seal Sect”, together with the verses. In the anthology, one hundred ten lost
poems have been collected, which are not recorded in the Quan Tang Shi and in the Quan Tang
Shi Bubian, and the authors of sixteen poems were recorded differently from them. We can
classify the pieces recorded in the anthology into six categories with special attention to the lost
poems.
The first category is the case where we can identify the pieces in the Quan Tang Shi. Du
Xunhe, Fang Gan, Qin Daoyu, Li Shanfu who are recorded in the second volume, belong to this
category. The second is the case where we can identify the pieces in the Quan Tang Shi but the
authors are recorded differently from it. Liu Yuxi (one piece), Xu Hun (one) in the first volume
belong to this category. The third is the case where some of the pieces are not identified there.
Most of the poets belong to this category. Bai Juyi (two pieces), Wen Tingyun (two), Zhang Ji
(three), Du Mu (one) in the first volume, Zhao Hu (four) in the second, and Luo Yin (one), Jia
Dao (four), Li Qunyu (one) belong to this category. Among these pieces, Because the second
couplet of Zhao Hu's “Zi Jie” and part of Luo Yin's “Ji Zhuke Gao Yuan Wai” among these are
still extant in other souces, we can certainly credit the authenticity of this book. The fourth is the
case where only small number of the pieces of the ten are identified. Li Yuan, Weng Tao in the
first volume, Pi Rixiu, Cao Tang, Luo Ye belong to this category. Among these, Cao Tang'
pieces are identified as parts of his “Da Youxian Shi” which has been extant. The fifth category
is the case where each ten poems selected in the anthology are not identified in the Quan Tang
Shi. Zhang Xiaobiao in the first volume, Wei Chan and Li Xiong in the second, Wu Yinbi in the third belong to this category. The four Korean poets in the anthology such as Choe Chiweon
and the like also belong to this category. The sixth category is a complicated case. In some cases, a small number of pieces are poems which have been lost for long and in some cases a different authorship is given to them. Therefore the authorship of the title pieces can not be identified at all. Zhang Gu and Ma Dai in the first volume, Han Zong in the third belong to this category.
Since some pieces in the anthology can be identified as poems which have been lost for long, data regarding these lost poems and the problem of different authorship are evaluated as an
important source which can complement the current extant sources.
