The purpose of this study is to suggest the way of improvement of the outdoor space of dementia special care units as a therapeutic environment. For the way of research are as follows
Firstly, this study executed theoretical investigation about the characteristics of dementia and existing studies. Secondly, extracted the element of planning of the outdoor space of dementia special care units. Thirdly, selected domestic 5 facilities and surveyed those site and practiced questionnaires intended for staffs of facilities. Lastly, analized its data and suggested the way of improvement of the outdoor space of dementia special care units. The results are as follows.
Firstly, planning elements for dementia special care units are classfied into accessibility, outdoor view, local rest space, activity space, esplanade or wandering, provision of stimulus, and safety.
Secondly, the time of activities of the elderly with dementia in the outdoor space is just from thirty minutes to one hour. It is due to the operational form of facilities which is related to the limitation of site, the cost of accommodation of outdoor space, and the cost of nursing
Lastly, points of improvement of the outdoor space of the facilities as a therapeutic environment are accommodation of lamp way, appropriate lest space, variable activity space, circular esplanade or wandering, gardening and facilities for reflection of the past, and handrail and enforced rubber road for safety.
