This study is to seek for figurative methods of the Korean catholic tradition focusing on Lee Byuk's life and [Yeonibyuk'seonsaeng Monghoirok] formulated since the history of the Korean catholic, and to remind the cultural meaning. Lee Byuk was an active Korean catholic in the ending of eighteenth century when people wanted a change as global doctrine perspective met limit. In the period, intellectuals accepted Catholicism with knowledge and reason, developed it to to religious belief, and among them there was Lee Byuk. After the oppression of Neo- Confucianist, the center of Catholicism moved from the upper class to the lower class, common people; and as a characteristics of oppression, Catholic doctrine and achievements of early activists were not written, and they were formulated the tradition of inside of the church. [Yeonibyuk'seonsaeng Monghoirok] is a work that the tradition is concentrated. Therefore, it shows a Koreanized(Interculturated) faith which has formulated from their folks and lives compared to the real life of Lee Byuk who was armed with logic and reason in eighteenth century. The report analyzed this focusing on Lee Byuk's tradition, intension of inside of the work and stream of the society. In a result, it shows a interculturated form which was combined with Cathoic faith and folk life since the center of Catholicism moved from early intellectuals to middle class people. It is a result that Catholicism is reinterpreted in our experiences and memories.

이 연구는 이벽의 삶과 《여니벽선몽회록》을 중심으로 한국 가톨릭의 전래사 속에서 형성된 한국 가톨릭 전승의 형상화 방법을 탐구하고 그 문화사적 의의를 고찰하는데 목적이 있다. 이벽은 성리학적 세계관의 한계로 새로운 변화를 모색하던 18세기 말, 한국 천주교인으로 활발하게 활동하였다. 당시 지식인들은 학문과 이성으로 천주교를 수용하고, 이를 신앙으로 발전시켰으며 이벽은 그 중심에 있었다. 신유박해 이후 한국 천주교의 중심이 양반에서 평민으로 이동하였고, 박해의 특성상 천주교 교리나 초기 활동가들의 업적은 문헌으로 기록되지 못하고 교회내 전승을 형성하게 된다. 《여니벽선몽회록》은 그 전승이 결집되어 나타난 작품이다. 따라서 이 작품에는 18세기 논리와 이성으로 무장한 이벽의 실제적 삶에 대비하여 민속과 생활 속에서 형성된 신앙의 한국화된 모습을 엿볼 수 있다. 본고에서는 이러한 모습을 주인공 이벽의 변화, 작품의 내적 지향, 당대 사회의 흐름 등을 중심으로 분석하였다. 그 결과 신앙의 중심이 전래 초기 지식인에서 일반 서민으로 바뀌면서 가톨릭 신앙과 우리의 생활 민속이 결합된, 한국화된 모습을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 유입된 가톨릭을 우리의 경험과 기억 속에서 재해석해낸 결과라고 하겠다.
