Lee, Chang-soo. (2007). An Analysis of the Functional Effectiveness of Translated English Tourist Information Texts. Conference Interpretation and Translation, 9(2), 155-180. The study investigates intercultural differences between Korean and English in the use of Appraisal resources in tourist texts in the realization of their persuasive function in text and the way these differences are dealt with in translations of Korean tour texts into English. Appraisal refers to semantic resources that we use to tell our readers or listeners how we feel about things and people in discourse. The present study shows that English tour texts tend to be higher in the frequence and force of Appraisal expressions used than their Korean counterparts. This suggests the need for translator's intervention in the TT to level up the range and force of Appraisal to bring it in line with English generic norms. The study illustrates these points through an detailed descriptive analysis of a Korean tour text and its English translations published a year apart. The analysis shows that critical awareness on the part of the translator of cross-lingual generic differences in the use of Appraisal resources and latitude to intervene in the TT to add, and strengthen the level of, Appraisal expressions are key to success in translation of Korean tour texts into English. Keywords: tour text translation, register analysis, systemic functional grammar, appraisal system, translation studies
