The first work by which the movie director and the composer united the combination has to be the first work or the second for either, so that both may continue the collaborative activity for a long term in the movie world. Relations of Hayao Miyazaki and Joe Hisaishi right fulfill this. Hisaishi’s music aims at the expression of view of the world of a work rather than at the expression of characters’ feelings, and its feature is in the stimulation of the imagination of man
who sees animation. The picture which Miyazaki creates seems to have so strong power that spectators can easily conceive an image without music and words.
However, Hisaishi’s music which has rich hint power can suggest the whole image including the unconscious world and support the view of the world of a work. The music of Nausicaä cannot necessarily be called a masterpiece, but it succeeds in inventing the synergistic effect by synchronizing music with a picture. Probably, Hisaishi is an irreplaceable composer for Miyazaki.
